Rear Oxygen Sensor: Can what the mechanic is telling me be true

Hello,
I had my CEL on and did the self diagnostic after going to AutoZone and finding out that my 1995 Maxima GLE is not OBD II compatible. The code I received was 07-07 (Rear Heated O2 Sensor) OK, I bought the Bosch part number 13242 o2 sensor and went to Pep Boys to have them install it. They even put it in the computer and that was the same part that came up if I did not have the part in hand. Then I get a call from PBY and they tell me that the oxygen sensor that I gave to them to install is not the right part. They said that the one I had was the diameter of a thumb, and the one that they took out from my car had a diameter of a pencil. They also mentioned that the conectors were the wrong type. They asked me if I wanted them to search for the part and they told me that they could get one from a Nissan dealership. The rear O2 sensor that they took out was the original that came with the car. Is it possible that the Bosch part that I got from Autozone would work or are they telling me the truth? I searched the forum and I had not found any references to a "smaller" rear o2 sensor found in the 95 Maxima. The part that they orderedd costs about $130 versus the OE Bosch that I got at Autozone. Seems a little fishy to me, am I being to cautious?

thanks for any input

I know the cost of the O2 sensor from Nissan sounds about right, when I changed out my sisters O2 sensor I had to get one from the dealer, yes I priced one out from AutoZone and it was a little cheaper, but if I remember correctly it did not have the connector on it, I would have to splice my old on onto the new O2 sensor, not really hard, but just one more thing to worry about if it is not done right, so I just went ahead and spent the extra money to get the genuine part from Nissan. Also your car being a 1995 model SHOULD be OBD1 not OBD2, OBD2 should have come out at 1996.

Their description of the rear sensor sounds correct. It is much thinner than either of the front sensors.

Check out www.oxygensensors.com for direct fit OEM replacements.

Re: Rear Oxygen Sensor: Can what the mechanic is telling me be true

Hi,

I had EXACTLY the same problem about 1 month ago. Got 0707; went to autozone; got rear O2 sensor; told by mechanics that the sensor didn't fit. I went back to autozone but they said itwas the right one. I returned it and went to napa. Finally I found out autozone's parts system gives the wrong sensor. I had to buy one from napa and everything is fine. Forget about autozone, go to somewhere else for the rear O2 sensor. Hope it helps.

BTW, my 95 gle needs new brake pads now, anyone knows where to get good deal on those? Thanks in advance.

AutoZone and NAPA both have sold me wrong parts, but AutoZone does it the most. I dont find out until I have removed the old one (a lot of work spent) and then I realize the idiots have done it again.. And have to wait for a new one and install it later. Id just buy them online for now on. Its cheaper, too.

Would there be any negative effects of using these rather then OEM Nissan, Bosch, etc?

I had the service engine soon light come on. Checked the stored codes and got 07 07 and 05 10. 05 10 showed "Undefined". 07 07 showed "Rear Heated O2 sensor".

I have read many posts about this sensor going bad. There seems to be some disagreement as to which of the O2 sensors this code refers to. There are supposed to be 3 O2 sensors; 1 on the left cylinder bank exhaust manifold (bank nearest the bumper), 1 on the right cylinder bank exhaust manifold (bank nearest the firewall), and one downstream of the catalytic converter. One Nissan mechanic swears the "rear) heated O2 sensor is actually on the "rear" bank of cylinders nearest the firewall.

Can anyone tell me which one it is for sure? Is it difficult to replace?

There are three o2 sensors

2 on the y-pipe. One on the left and one on the right.
3rd is either on the cat or right after the cat, depending on what year 4th gen.

The rear heated o2 senosr is on or after the cat.

Nice thought...did anyone else's factory (OEM) O2 sensors say "BOSCH" on them?
