Maxima Relcutant to Start

I insert the key and turn it to ACC, everything is fine, I turn it to ON, everything is still as it should be. When I try to start the car, sometimes it doesn't want to. I don't hear the starter going, the fuel pump doesn't turn on, nothing in the engine gets power. At first I just wriggled the key, and after a couple wriggles it would start. Now I've noticed that it is more eager to start when I push the key down and away from me.

Does this sound like something is loose, broken, or bent in my ignition? My key might be dull, too. Anyone have any other input?

Sounds like you need a new ignition switch.

Could be a starter solenoid...same symptoms my old exploder had. If thats the case, make sure if you have it repairedd professionally, do NOT let them change the starter, cuz im sure its fine.

I think you're right about this. I have the same problem. I've been using my automatic start because the car doesn't always start with the key. I'm going to check this out. Thanks.

If it starts with the auto start and not always with the key, then you definately need a new ignition switch.

I'm checking out prices right now. Thanks again. Do you know how hard it is to install?

It is pretty easy I think, do you have a haynes manual, if not get one. I think you just take the plastic casing off around the steering wheel unhook the ignition switch unscrew some screws and that is that. Not sure though?

Yea I have a haynes manual. I'll take a look at it. I was told that the bolts that hold the switch don't have heads so that they can't be tampered with which make the job alot harder.

Alright Cmac; if that works for you can you please post about it when it is done? I don't have a lot of free time and want to cut down on this project since I'm also planning on regreasing my starter, cleaning my throttle body, installing my 'y' and giving the car a good detailing.

I had the same problem. It was the ignition switch. It's been fine since I changed it.

boybilly, that is very encouraging. How much did that cost and where did you get it? Is an ignition switch Maxima-specific or can I just get the sucker at Pep Boys?

Alright, I've been thinking that since I enjoy fiddling with electronics and my grandfather suggested that I bypass the starter if I have to anyway, perhaps I should rig up a "Starter" button for my car so that when you have the key in the On position, you just have to push my button to start the car. I would probably put this in the ash tray since I don't smoke, and I would leave room for a toggle switch for the naws I plan on getting.

Does this sound too crazy? I have all summer until the next semester of school starts, and this start-button thing doesn't sound like it will cost much money, do any of you think that it is outright impossible / haltingly difficult?

I bought the Nissan part. I don't know if it is available otherwise. It costs less than $30 and takes about an hour to replace. I would go that route rather than wire another switch.
