How Much to tint windows?
I have a 99 Maxima and looking towards getting all my widows tinted to the same tint level(the maximum legal amount).
Anyways, I'm located around San Jose, California and was wondering what kind of prices would be appropriate for a basic tint job? I don't want to get ripped off or anything.
Also do most places take the windows off the car before applying the tint, or do they leave them on?
Just posting this because I've gotten quotes from $225 up towards $600.

im not sure if tint fades with time or not, i used to have 5% smokey mirrored tint, got it put on the car back in 97 when the car was new, over time i marked it up on the inside moving small furniture and stuff in the car. Just replaced the tint this year, so thats about 5 years, and the tint was fine except for the nicks i had put it in. Which is why i had it replaced. So its at least a 5 or 6 year investment.
I now have the "dark as night" 5% limo tint. I had it installed for 150.
Recently got a ticket for being over the tint limit. Cost me 85 dollars. The fine verys by county in MS. First ticket ever for 5% tint for me anyways.
Then on the flip side, some police, highway patrol, and sheriff cars are using this 5% tint on their cars around here. Not sure how they are able to use it. Its certainly fine by be. I think they need it, but I sure hate being told that its illegal for me.
Bottom Line: I have lived in 4 southern states in the past 15 years. In that time I have only gotten one ticket from illegal tint.
Hints: If you have a sunroof, dont tint it. Keep the top closed and open it around the law. Plenty of sun will shine in. You can also roll your windows down half way with the sunroof open. They will have good visibility of you. Precationary measures of course, and try not to look like a ricer. But thats almost impossible with org members. We have so much class and style. I expect GQ will be calling some of us up for an interview.
Big No No's: Never put that sticker on your windshield that misrepresents your actually tint level. If you say you put that on in our state its a 1,000 dollar fine, or for anyone who put it on, like the place that tinted the car. Another no no is that if your tint is illegal, never say you put it on, or tell them who actually put it on, if you like them. Putting it on the car is another 1,000 dollar fine. Which would explain why many places dont install it.
But again for the regular driver, its not a big deal at all around here. Like I said cost me 85 dollars, cant say I wasnt sweating it. But when I found out it was 85, I laughed, and continued searching for more mods for the max.

5% all the way around %150 cash, no recipt San Antonio..... The back winshield and back 2 windows can be as dark as you want here, the front's legal limit is 35% i think. I just roll down the front 2 when im next to a cop.
It took me a little while to find a place that would do it. If you want darker than legal you just gotta say I want it (whatever % you want) w/ no recipt and pay ca$h but make sure they will give you atleast a limited warranty b/c it might bubble or its possible to get sant in between the tint and window. I was unhappy w/ the rear and went back a day or 2 later and they replaced it.

A decent tinter will use a a piece rear windshield and on the door windows they will grind/round the edge to make it look like it came tinted from the factory - here in Oregon it's about $190 for mobile tint service

Yea seamless rear is critical. I believe that a lot of places actually do use 2 pieces, but as long as they say "seamless" it's ok. I believe mine is two pieces, but the only time you can tell is from the drivers seat looking in the rearview mirror if the sun hits it right there is a tiny shiny line along one of the defroster "wires". There is definitely no overlap or gap...anyone who does that is a moron...but there are places out there that do it (I've seen cars with overlaps...OMG!)
Mine cost me about $215 with a lifetime warranty. Personally I wouldn't be afraid to pay anything under $250 or so. I think it depends on where you are whether you can find a place you trust to do it for less money.
I can't believe people tint their windshields. It must look good...but that still seems a little sketchy to me. I have 35% (legal in MA) and I wish I could have gone one step darker (what is it like 23% or something like that is the next darkest?). I think that's the best looking/best visibility/keep the cops away compromise.

$190, 35% all around (not legal, no reciept, said he would only do it because he knew me so well), lifetime warranty, I've only had it for 4 days and it looks okay. I had quite a few bubbles and imperfections when I first got it, but he told me to give it time and bring it back in 4-5 days. Well most of the bubbles have dissapeared (weird?) and it is looking better everyday. Friday I'm taking it back for final touches and I should be good. Oh yea, I have a 2-piece rear window joined on a defroster line. You use to be able to see where they joined because there was tint juice along the edge, but now it's all gone and it looks just like a 1-piece in any light.
