96 SE Reliability

Hey guys, I'm new here and have just a few questions. I live in Vancoouver BC and am wanting to buy my friends 96 SE. It's going for 16K but hopefully I can bring him down to $14K b/c of prices in the paper. Anyways I need to convince the parents that it is a good car b/c I currently own a Jeep TJ and they think that it is soooo reliable in terms of problems. It has and extended bumper to bumper warranty which is not in favor of me getting the Max. I've been reading posts about bearing problems, whirring noises and so I'm wondering if it will be worth it for me to buy. It has been sitting in the garage for the past 8 months now and has been well maintained since my buddy bought it. I would appreciate some feedback from you guys. Thankx a lot...hope to be a Max owner soon!

As long as the car has been maintained, and not driven like a race car on a regular basis, it will be a very reliable car... I have a 96 SE also.... Its a great car...

I have owned my 95 SE for 8 months now, and I couldnt think of finding a more reliable car. I wouldnt pass it up. the V6 for the engine is so smooth for driving, powerful for the interstate, and the gas milege is great for a 6 cylinder. Good luck. Get one, you wouldnt regret it

Yes there are going to be creaks and rattles. I've driven my Maxima hard since day one(Dec 31, 1995 - in Germany for 5 years no less) & she still runs very good. The only problems have been self inflicted & of course the paint that chips way too much.

If the parents thought a Jeep had good reliability they'll love the max. My mom's 2001 Jeep has had tons of problems (approx 10) in under 30K miles, whereas my 97 SE has only had normal maintenence done. I'm not sure how much those $ figures equate to in U.S. currency, but any decent maxima is worth retail.
