starting car w/out clutch pedal engaged

I was fueling up yesterday and got back in the car, and it wouldn't start. nothing would happen, not even the solenoid click. however the radio, lights, etc worked fine though and i narrowed it down to the button behind the clutch pedal that allows you to start the car when the clutch is pressed to the floor. well i unplugged the wiring going into the button and shorted it w/ a paperclip. sure enough, she started right up

basically i'm just wondering if there is any negative effect when you start a car without the clutch engaged. because i might just leave it the way it is now. thanks for the advice. sean

I've been starting my car that way ever since I did the tranny conversion last year. Just be sure your tranny is in neutral or you have the clutch pedal depressed when you start.

yeah it's always in neutral when i start it. but i thought there might be some reason that you typically have to start a 5sp car with the clutch engaged.

It's a safety issue. It prevents people from getting hurt or causing damage from starting their car with it in gear.
