it looks like people are having problems with the budget y-pipe. what's up with that?

I live in NY and bought my car in NY, and somehow I have a cali spec, so... can't really go by where the car was from. The best way to find out if you have cali or fed spec is to pop the hood and decode the VIN. Someone prolly has a link to it, cause I don't. Cali spec cars also have one more sensor in the engine bay, again, maybe someone has a link for you because I really don't remember. If you live in cali it'll be difficult to pass emissions regardless of fed or cali spec due to the fact that aftermarket Y-pipes remove a pre-cat.

Is it Cali or Fed spec?
Raise your hood. Look for a shiny metal identification tag fastened to the passenger side of firewall. The top row is the Vehicle Identification Number, starting with J. The second row is model information. The first five characters are BLHUL. The 12th character is the destination:
N = Canada
V = California
U = US, not California

EDIT:
you can also just count your O2 sensor plugs on the front of the engine. 2 for fed-spec, 3 or 4 for cali-spec

anyone ever paint their y with hi temp paint for added rust protection... will hi temp engine enamel and gloss work? i blacked out my stock exhust resonator with it and its still good no chipping.. but it think the y gets hottter than the resonator.
