Is a true dual exhaust mod possible on a Maxima and if so has anyone ever successfully done it? If it is possible, would using 2" pipes for each side reduce exhaust stream velocity? I was thinking that using 2" pipes would be as bad as using 4" in a single exhaust system.
Possible? yes, with a whole lot of money. A true dual would require straight from header back, cancelling the Y-pipe and B-pipe. I also dont see how it would fit underneath either. You have to take into account the spare tire well, and EVAP box, among clearance issues. Also, i believe 2 inches would be far to large, since i think mustangs run 2inch pipes. I would just go the route of a fake dual exhuast anyways, save yourself alot of money and headaches and have the same look...

Im very interested in this mod but what did you do about the EVAP canister on the drivers side ?? I have a 96 and I definelty have that box...hmmm
Where doed the piping split ?? right at the cat and how ?? i wanna know more..how do you hide the pipe on the left side from under ??

I just had my custom (fake) dual exhaust done yesterday. Afer seeing the end result, I would just go with the fake setup if you want it for looks, but if you want it for power and want a true setup, you're going to be looking at large spending amount. I paid about $150 for everything. Thanks 99Maxima5spd for your help.

Thanks for the info guys. I thought the 2" would be too big. I was thinking to run both pipes together where the stock runs but I didn't get a chance to check if that would be possible. I'm not really interested in the look of a fake dual. I just wanted to know if the performance differnce with a true dual would be significantly better than the single pipe system before I decide to upgrade the exhaust.
The engine in my car is the VQ20 and not the VQ30. It's a 1997 Japan import so it's called a Cefiro instead of Maxima. It came with TV, six disc changer, 40,000km all for a price of $9000US. It's a 2000cc though

I live in Trinidad in the Carribean and my local muffler shop said they would build and install a custom y-pipe for about $55US, but that is with crush bends. I checked around and I'm getting a 90 degree mandrel bend for about $30US, so with mandrel bends the y-pipe should cost about $100US.
From what you all are saying it seem the dual system may be more trouble than it's worth.

well for a "TRUE" dual setup, it has to come from the headers back, meaning there is no Y-pipe. It would be replaced with something like an X-pipe, or H-pipe, you'd have to have cats on both sides (if you choose) and you would have no b-pipe..
In case your still drawing a blank...
Headers-->X-pipe/H-pipe-->mufflers
I dont know where you would move the cannister to, you would first have to figure out how you were gonna route your pipes and such, then figure where you were going to mount your other muffler. You couldnt run pipes bigger than say 1.75inches. it would all just be expensive and probably worthless....
