Brake Shims

What does brake shims do? Anyone know? I had my rear pads replaced recently and I noticed that they didn't put the shims back in. Will this cause a problem?

The shims are supposed to reduce braking noise. Going without them won't cause any problems, it just might make the brakes squeel a little.
