I own a 1997 Nissan maxima and recently the Service Engine Soon light came on.
I checked the code and found it to be 0201. The short
description of it is Ignition problem. I don't have a
factory repair manual for this car and it would take
about a week and a half to get it. If anybody who has
this manual could post some more information on this code I will be really
gratefull. I think the code and diagnostics are the same for 1995 through 1998 maximas.
THANKS.

The malfunction is detected when the ignition signal in the primary circuit is not entered during engine cranking or running.
The items to check include
- Harness or connectors (the ignition primary circuit is open or shorted.)
- Power transistor unit built into ignition coil
- Condenser
- Crankshaft Position Sensor (REF)
- Crankshaft Position Sensor (REF) circuit

For most home mechanics the Haynes repair manual is the best choice. For a detailed comparison of 4th Generation Maxima manuals, see http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/manualcompare.html

Thanks for the prompt reply guys. I'll try to get the Haynes Manual and do a little diagnosis tomorrow. By the way it seems a little odd that the ignition is having problem at only 38,000 miles. Also, before the SES light went on I had noticed some rough idle speed and some vibration. It happened for about 30 seconds and it has been driving fine since then.
