Crankshaft Position sensor (reference)

Crankshaft Position sensor (reference)
I got this when I manually checked my ECU. I was expecting to find only the Knock Sensor Code, because I always have it, but this time I pulled 04 07, which is the Crankshaft Position sensor (reference).
I have been searching on this, and I know that there are two sensors. I'm stil not quite sure the purpose of this sensor. I know that hard starting or no starting at all are common incidents with this sensor failure, but I havent experienced any of it. My car always starts. Also, I didnt have a CEL light, I just checked for the heck of it, so i'm wondering why this wouldnt trip the CEL.
Basically, I would like to know what exactly this sensor does to my engine, if someone could explain, I would greatly appreciate it.
Again, I'm not experiencing any starting problems, but I still do have the advanced timing problem, but thats due to the KS (i assume), and I've had that for a while, this is the first time that this code pops up.
