not sure why your wheel position matters?

however, I've started to notice that my ignition contacts are
wearing a little thin (so it seems) so I've been really turning
that key to ensure contact.

or, is it that your steering wheel is locked and you can't turn
the key? if that's the case, then I would just keep trying to
get the key to unlock the steering.

so, I guess my advice is to try harder and try again (not very good
advice, I know, atleast you know people are looking!).

It's not your fuel pump, because, if it were you would still be able
to hear the engine attempting to crank...my vote is to turn the key
just a little bit harder and see if it's the connection...or, check
to see if there's a starter fuse???

good luck!

you're brake peddle is hard because the fluid is not circulating.
when your car starts, it will go back to normal...

now, let's reconsider your issue:
1) keys work
2) everything works fine, except the starting thing.

I'd guess that your starter is fuct...check ALL the wires coming
to/from the starter and then check them again...your problem is
there somewhere.

It's not fuel, because your car won't crank at all.

that's good news!
that noise is your started trying desperately to start the car...

looks like you don't have enough power to start the car.
you said your lights and windows all worked fine, so, I don't
think it's the battery...check to make sure that the starter is
connected properly.

Also, just to make sure we cover everything, try jump-starting the
car first.

good luck!

fair enough...try jump-starting the car first...if that doesn't
work, then we'll find the starter.

OK...the starter I **THINK** is just under the brake master cylinder.
It's not an easily accessible area...but, look there for loose/damaged
wires.

good luck!

IMAGE -- I *have* to ask --> are you certain that you tried to
jump the car properly? I just want to make sure that we're covering
the easy ones first...

The brake master cylinder is on the driver's side of the engine
bay...it has silver tubes coming out of a plastic bottle and the
bottle says "brake" somewhere on it...

The starter is in a round-ish metal case below that...on the
bottom half of the engine...

hope this helps...good luck!

If you have a "security" lamp on the dash- does it stay lit? Do you have an ignition key with a computer chip in it (thicker-than-normal key)? If so, something may be grounded improperly.

its either your battery or your starter. I am thinking its your battery. Even though the lights on the dash seem nice and bright and the radio still works...dont mean jack. The battery can have enough power for those things and just not have enough juice to crack the car properly.

connect jumper cables from a good running car to your car battery and let it charge your battery for a few mintues. Then try starting your car. It should start up.

And dont turn your key really hard like thats gonna do anything...cause it doesnt. You might just bend your key or damage your ignition lock.

good luck

he tried jumping it...twice.
if you read the post start to finish, you'd know what I meant by "turning the key harder"...

Its my Starter. This mechanic guy came to my house asked me for my long flat head screwdriver told me to go start my car.. and all i heard was him bangin like hell on my starter... And it started I was like holy ****! cool! He sed yep.. u were right it was your starter... Its gunna cost like $150 for a rebuilt one w/ a year warranty... He's on his way to go pick it up now.... The contacts on the starter were lose.. I guess him bangin on it with a flathead helped the contacts touch.,,. can anyone explain this theory???

on an old mustang, I had to do the same thing...banging it sorta "jolts" it alive, which is why you're problem was intermittent.

hold onto that warranty! I hear that rebuilt starters can crap out in Maximas.

good luck!

New starter is not that expensive. But if it's just contacts you don't need a new one. I seriously doubt it is even that. How long did you continuously crank it before it started? My guess is 5-20 seconds. 4th gen max's can flood. It happended to mine the first time after about 95k miles. It happens when you start it up for a very short period and then shut it off. The next time you have to crank it to get it to start. In the normal start cycle it takes a few minutes for the engine to warm up and to drop to the normal 650 rpm idle. During that time more fuel is flowing. That's how it floods.
