I thought foam type filters don't need oiling.

When you oiled in the past, how much did you spray on? Was it a possibility that you oversprayed? I did that once and that's after I thought I gave enough time for the filter to "dry" up. The last time I re-oiled my filter, I stopped soon after the red color was "restored" back into the filter element.

Did you put too much oil or is that just a side effect? What are the symptoms of the failure?

Frankencar offers an Apex dry cone filter I believe.

yep, Apexi is a dry element filter (cone filter). I just installed one on my car a few days ago with no complaints so far.

I bought an APC cone filter from pep boys and I didn't spray any oil on it. I think they come pre-oiled. Anyone wanna confirm this??

I purchased a new one from a racing shop and it was over oiled from the factory. I also just replaced the maf today and the car is good again. I started having a problem a week after i replaced my old k&n cause of a hole in it.

i replaced the one before this cause i personally oiled that one too much but this was brand new in the box. my nissan mechanic said eventually the oil will eat up the mafs and its better to get a non oiled one. Luckly i got one out of a 96 max with 6000 miles on it for 60 bucks instead of 438 bucks brand new

The oils don't eat the maf sensor. They wind up coating it. My last mafs that went out eventually started working again. It would blow black smoke(burning rich) then it would putter and stop. BUt it eventually started working again after tapping around the mafs. If I were you I would try to spray the mafs with some solvent to clean it and it may work before replacing. IF that doesn't work, well you'll have to buy another one. How much are those costing these days?

What did you use? I woner if brake cleaner might work? It should break up oils effectively.

Why do you suppose? Is there some stuff in there that the MAF sensor might not like?

I just checked with the local Nissan dealer on MAF prices. They run around $560 with tax.

I just made another post about MAFs and grounding. I was also wondering if the oils from the K&N affect the heater element. A film of oil would likely cause issues with the MAF readings. I'm considering going back to the paper filer or at least some non-oiled foam. I think the Amsoil filters are not oiled

Is there anyone who has had the Frankencar intake with the Apexi dry cone filter in for a while that can offer an opinion? I want to get one but I would like to know about any reliability issues.

i use the regular cone filter sold by 3A racing, obx, matrix and so on. i just don't oil them. all you have to do is take it to a gas station and blow the filter from the inside out with the air hose every 2months and they stay clean. just make sure you get the filter that has a 2nd filter in the middle.
