I hillclimbed my '97 Maxima SE
Guys, I thought you might like a Maxima race report. I've always raced my '71 Datsun 510 for over a decade, 2 years ago setting a record "door slammer" run in my VG30ET powered dime. Well, I sold the car last year, so I decided to run my street car this year. You can look at my sig to see what I've done to it, but it's not highly modified and I was running on my street tires. I could have run the car in 2 classes, STS being the logical class since I was on street rubber, but I ended up running in the more competitive DSP class against 4 other cars on race rubber. I ended up having a battle with a long time rival in his '85 BMW 325i that was well prepped and on race tires. After 3 of 4 runs, I was 2 seconds behind him, my 2:10.2 to his 2:08.5. The hillclimb is on a nice paved road, 2 miles long which makes a 1000 ft climb. (You can check out more info on the hillclimb at: http://www.eescc.org/hillclimb.cfm ) So I let it all hang out and knocked off nearly 2 seconds on my last run, moving into 1st place by .07 secs. The guy in the BMW was unable to better his time, so I ended up taking the first place trophy, posting a faster time than many stripped SE-Rs on race tires, too. They couldn't believe that they got beat by a "mom's car" (I told them to "bite me") on street tires and an automatic to boot.
Unfortunately, running in DSP, I was still 3 seconds off the record in that class, but would have beat the STS record by 2.4 seconds. With R compound tires, I'm sure I would have ended up with a DSP record. I was only 5 seconds from a Z06 Vette on race rubber, so the Max (OK, it had mostly to due with the driver) put the "Smackdown" on many Subarus, Rabbits & GTIs, and other formidable Nissans. How's that for putting the Max to the test, other than all this "straight line" stuff most guys do?

It takes serious HP, excellent handling, and driver willing to risk the car (and knows the hill) to break the 2 minute barrier. Watch the video and imagine averaging 60 mph, with some 40 mph corners and the fastest section in the 85-90 mph range. Just a bit hairy!
