Nightrider's automagic......!!!

The first time I posted the message the website was acting funny. Well anyway. I rode in Rich's (Nightrider's) car over the weekend.....and all I can say is SSSSIIIICCCCKKKK!!! He is definitely the QUICKEST N/A MAXIMA ON THIS BOARD and maybe in the country (we didn't get a chance to do a top end run). I mean his car runs second all the way up to 75-80 mph. His low end has improved but once the thing gets to 4-4500k, the car is just gone. I mean the torque and pull on this car from first to second is ungodly. All I can say is his car pulls harder than any other Max I've ever been regardless of generation (1-6). And yes that includes 5 and 6 speeds as well. Rich's recent upgrade of his transmission gives me as an automagic owner the pleasure of knowing that my car can be a beast and still stay N/A or not do a 5 speed tranny swap. Now don't get me wrong, Rich paid a pretty penny for the work done to the tranny and if there is a N/A Max in America that pulls harder than his, I would love to ride in it. Before you 5 speed owners get all upset, yes I do like sticks, two out of the first three cars I owned were sticks. I loved mine because of the control it offered the me in different situations while driving. But to get that pull off the line for an auto, a 5 speed swap is not neccessary(sp?) No matter what anybody says.

Fastest NA max?? Hmmm.. What mods? Time slip? I'm skeptical. I really don't see how thats possible without some help. The NA game is usually very close.

I hope you are not including the 5-spds and especially not the gen 5 6-spds in that blanket statement... because I highly doubt that.

HOWEVER I do believe that anything is possible... but not without some timeslips... let's see 'em!

Wrong choice of words, not this Board, but this forum(4th gen). Any stock 5th gen stick and 6th gen stick can't hang.

These are the specs:

-Carbon kevlar clutches and steel bands
-2500 rpm high stall torque convertor with twin lock-up plates balanced to 15,000 rpm)This is a one-of-a kind custom made unit.
-Heavy-duty hydraulic pump (machined)
-Gear ratio has been changed to 3.85 final drive
-Custom made Chrome-moly driveshafts (1" thicker in diameter than stock)
-Stage 4 VB mod (Chirps 2nd hard and chirps 3rd too!)
-Posi-Trac differential (from 98' Toyota Supra)
-Large B&M tranny cooler
-Redline fluid

This is what's making his car do what it's doing. Sorry for the delay people.

man it must feel like your getting punched in the kidneys everytime it shifts with a stage 4 vb, my stage 2 will chirp second and shifts into 2nd from above 2k rpms can be rough/stiff, its good stuff.

how much did all that cost? labor/parts

so does every 4th gen automatic, even stock. A built tranny like that will do wonders for a launch, but thats about it, it shouldn't be much different once moving. A built tranny can make a car quicker off the line and at low speed, but not any faster.

I just rode in the car and, no the 2-3 shift is not real hard in my opinion, and i like a smooth ride. I would consider the shifting a stage 2 vb The car is now geared differently and he now has only a 10% drivetrain loss so the car is now as quick as a stick would be. He can now run with any stick with close to the same mods or more. Also because of posi he has no problems launching, so he will take most cars off the line.

wouldn't reducing the final drive result in lower top speed for all gears? my 2nd goes up to 80mph w/ whatever the stock final drive is...

I don't think your 2nd gear runs to 80. Third gear yes, but not 2nd, espcially a stock auto maxima. The gearing won't allow it, unless you have a VB mod and then you need one that won't snap your axels if your lucky, that's why the upgrade of axels is needed. After enough strong launches your axels would break.

I said he was the quickest, i didn't say he had the best top end. And your getting to 80 in 3rd gear not 2nd. The OD trick locks out 4th not 3rd. Your car won;t alllow it unless you have a modded tranny or ECU or both. Gear ratio's in a stock auto Max won't allow it.

Every stock automatic maxima will run to 80 speedo indicated mph if shifted in to the red in 2nd gear. VB mod has nothing to do with gearing. Getting a VB won't change your gearing.

I'm talking about driving with the car in "D" not "2". Your max will shift into 3rd way before you get to 80 while in "D" with a stock NA auto MAX. The VB might not change it but literally changing the gear ratio and a lot of other things will cause the ratio to change and allow power to run your car to that speed before shifting into third.

Make sure the pick can get a shot of what gear your in as well. Remeber "D" not "2". And make sure you don't hit the OD button in the process. Post the pics whenever you get them. When you do that, let us know your secret. Because your able to make your car do what over 90% of the maximas in the norhern hemisphere with an auto 4th gen can't do. Without any mods, in "D", please pass on the knowledge with out making your car hit 80 in second while moving.

vb mod changes gear ratio?
He is only losing 10% power from the crank to the wheels. His top end I can't speak onbecause we took it up to 100mph a few times. The vb mod alone won't change the ratio but all of these mods would:

do you know what you're talking about?
if you change gear ratio's for shorter gears/quicker shifts then the top speed of each gear will be lower than it was previously.

and if you're friend made the ratio's longer, then thats just stupid, and will result slower accerlation.

what power mods does this automatic car have? because there's no way its the "quickest" n/a max
maybe the quickest n/a automatic 4th gen max, but i doubt even that.

Neal is running 13.6 - i find it hard to believe an automatic without boost keeping up with that.

the top speed of stock maxima's 2nd gear (1.55 w/ 3.62 final drive) is 82mph @ 6600rpm

the top speed of 3.85 final drive maxima w/ 1.55 2nd gear is 78mph @ 6600rpm

First of all when you did the car test did you take in account the aftermarket mods that he has. One being a specially designed intake. Second he has an ecu. Third, he has had his manifold worked on as well. If you have all of these factors programmed in, then let me know. Also, eventough your program can simulate it, I bet your car can't do it. Especially on the road as I said earlier. Your car will shift gears in "D" well before you hit 6600 rpms.

Posi-Trac differential (from 98' Toyota Supra)
Someone want to explain how a Supra differential can fit in a Maxima's transmission? Or why an existing Maxima LSD wouldn't have the been the glaringly obvious choice? Or why a Supra can have Positraction (NOT just any LSD) in the first place? Or how all of these mods together will get a 4th gen to 13.6 without tearing off body panels?
