Need help with new tires!!!
I have a 98 maxima se and I was wondering if someone could help me with tires. I know that the topic has been posted before so excuse my laziness. My stock RS-A are horrible but there are few pickings for a 215/55/16 tire so is it possible to get a 225/55/16 tire. I want to buy a tire with a 55 profile because i don't intend to lower the car. Is there a good tire with a h or v rating at a good price. Please recommed something from experience...thanks

Tires
Of course you know that the 55 doesn't mean that every tire with a 55 profile is the same. in case you don't, let me break it down for ya;
225 = width of the tire
55= Height of the tire . . . .as a percent of the width.
In other words;
a 215/55/16 tire has a height of 215 *0.55=118.25 mm,
a 225/55/16 tire has a height of 225 *0.55=123.75 mm
16 = the size of rim/wheel its supposed to go on.
So, if you want to keep the same profile as your original tire (215/55/16), then 118.25 is what you should be aiming for.

Re: Tires
I run Dunlop SP5000 225/55-16 tires and very satisfied with them. I think it's a good performer for an all-season tire.
Check out http://www.tirerack.com they have tire reviews and suggestions.

i just put on a pair of 225/55-16 on my 99 se (on the back) and they look good! i got dunlop sp sport 8000s; i have heard good and bad things about them, bad stuff like them wering out too fast and also having no traction in snow. the slightly larger size fills in the ugly gap that the max has with stock wheels.
i cant wait to wear out the front factory rs-a (puke) tires and replace them. tirerack.com has a pretty good site with reviews and customer surveys, and tires.com also has a site for checking prices.
fyi, i was considering three tires -- pirelli p7000 supersport, dunlop sp sport 8000, and the bridgestone potenza re-730. i ended up with the 8000s because they were the cheapest that i could get from discount tire (they installed them for me).
you really have a choice between 225/55-16 and 225/50-16, they both fall on either side of the factory original (one bigger, one smaller, by about the same margin). i think the 225/55-16 will wear down to the diameter of a worn out standard tire, but for the 225/50, you will begin at the size of a worn out factory tire, and wear down even smaller..... that helped to make my decision...

personally, i think the 225/55 looks better, i have also thought that the wheel gap was ugly on the maxima (it should have come with 17" wheels, which it does on the se now). i have only had it for about 5 hours, and i havent seen it since lunch, but at lunch i looked at it and i thought it looked good.
either way, going to 225 makes the sidewalls bulge out a little more, which makes the tire look "beefy".. is that the right word?

I check out the tirerack.com website before i posted but as i said there are few picking for 215/55/16 tires. So i was wondering if i should go with 225/55/16. I know they will fit on the rim but is there any thing bad about fitting a 225/55/16 on the stock rim. I had a 94 altima before my maxima and i replaced the 205/60/15 tires with 215/60/15 and it seem kind like the stock rim couldn't take that 10mm difference. so basically will there be any ill effect with replacing stock tires with a larger (10mm) tires??? i don't want to a lower profile tire as i said because of the wheel gap. on the tirerack.com website, Iwas looking at the dunlop sp sport w-10 (it look like an awesome tire, good rating and great design)help
225's on 16" rims...
I got Potenza RE730s in 225/50/16. There is no problem at all running 225s on your factory 16X6.5" rims. They do stick out a little, but they definitely improve handling, and look a little beefier. I got 50s because I hate the way "tall" tires look on the Max (BTW my car is lowered).
I *adore* my Potenzas, incredible traction on dry surfaces in corners, more confident feel on wet roads. These are not all-season tires, so if it snows where you live, don't bother.
Next subject: 17" rims will *NOT* decrease the wheel well gap. The point is to maintain the stock wheel diameter, so if you get larger rims, you *must* get lower profile tires to maintain speedometer accuracy!
I think the issue here is that if you were to get 225/55s you will have a slightly slower speedo reading, whereas if you get 225/50s, your speedo will read slightly faster (like mine).
Hope that helps,
Justin

my kumhos are great. the new grippier tires i have made a significant difference. i advise everyone to upgrade to performance tires. i got the kumho supra ecsta 225/50/16 to keep the overall tire diameter closest to stock. the wheel gap doesnt look that great but i do plan to lower my max very soon. kumhos are cheap and work very well, go get them.
Tires
Check out PepBoys for there Futura SuperSport GTX 225/50 hr16
They run about $400 a set with road hazard waranty and other little perks. I love mine. Oh and when they wear out you can go back and use the treadwear warranty to get new ones for half the price. I wore out my front tires and got two new tires for $43.
