5spd Transmission screeching when takeing off????

Hey all,

It's been hapenning ALOT more lately...

Whenever i take off, in any gear, 85% of the time, my transmission makes this loud screeching type sound. Like 2 pieces of metal are rubbing together. Once i let the clutch out fully, then the sound goes away.

I accidently left my car in 3rd gear when i had to show my pass to park this morning... I let the clutch out and boviously didn't move very much, but i heard the screeching sound again. I let the clutch out again and put it in first and took off. Though that time, no sound... It seems to only really happen from a stop??? weird!

Anyone have an idea what might be going on?
it's hapenning more often now. Before it would happen once every couple months...

Thanks guys

the bearing itself is cheap.... the labor is what sucks, you gotta drop the tranny.

I have a low 'moan' when starting from first, is this also the release bearing? How sure are you that this is the cause (percentage-wise), I'd hate to invest in the part, do the labor then not fix the problem?
Thanks,
Matt

If it is a metallic moan when starting in first gear only and is gone when you fully engage, it may just be clutch groan. For whatever reason, I heard this more often from 20k to 60k miles on my car. Now I rarely hear it at 90k+ miles.

Hey guys... I'm back! lol....

I''m getting this problem MUC MUCH more frequently now!

I can reproduce this problem now at any time...

if i let the clutch out and it doesn't make a sound... then i press the clutch in, tap the gas and try again letting the clutch out. Eventually it starts screeching. I can hold the brake down while in first gear and letting the clutch out... I hear screeching. The more i let the clutch out, the more screeching i hear.

Is this a sign of a shot release bearing?

What happens if i leave it like this until like next summer?

Thanks guys

Sounds like the release bearing to me. My firebird used to do it. My mechanic said it wasnt anything to be concerned about. Just that eventually i was gonna need a new clutch. Which it would make sense to do the whole thing once your in there. So its fine to drive. Just start saving your money. Anyone know how much a typical clutch job costs?

I'm going to head off tonight to the transmission specialist to see
how much it's going to cost...

I'm expecting about 1100$ or something like that...

god this has been a terrible year for my maxima...

How long do you think i can last with this clutch then?

The way it is? I doubt anyone could tell you for sure. But i'll say this. I drove my Firebird for almost a year. YMMV. Best of luck to ya. And if anyone charges you $1100 for a clutch they're out of their mind. I cant imagine it costing more than $600.
