Engine flush

i thought i was supposed to flush engine frequantly, but today a mechanic told me that engine flushes are bad for the car and should not be done unless the car has some kind of a problem.

as a auto tech I can honestly the Nissan engine flushes are quite nice, you would be shocked how well they clean the engine, but i wouldnt do it on a high milage car becuase it will cause more leaks

"Nissan Engine Flush" ??? what exectly do they do? run some fluid for 5 min.? (i had Gunk Motor Flush used in my car).

btw. the mechanic said that flushes will only cause oil leaks in the future. i can agree that they might be good if used every 50k-70k or something...

If you use a good quality oil, there should be no need for recurring flushing. Generally speaking, Engine Flush is a very powerful solvent that is intended to dissolve deposits which have accumulated in your engine. My experience has been that (given the relatively short time allowed to circulate through the engine) they will not remove heavy deposits from extremely dirty engines...the result may be worse than before you started as the flush could soften the deposits, causing them to contaminate your fresh oil (and potentially clog the filter) quicker.

i work at grease monkey and we recommend the gumout engine flush. I mean, if you keep up with oil changed, no matter what oil you use, you'll be fine. But, yea, we usually run it for 5-10 minutes and after adding the new oil, it runs very crisp and clean. However, with higher mileage vehicles, the oil could seem dirty if the engine is burning oil, and obviously, it will not solve the problem
