After how many miles did your OEM clutch wear out?
After how many miles did your OEM clutch wear out?
This is just about the Nissan OEM clutch. At what point did you experience sufficient clutch slippage to warrant a new one? Was it a very gradual wearing out or did the clutch suddenly start noticeably slipping?
I'm at 132k and my clutch still feels strong. I can get it to slip a little at WOT in 3rd when it's very cold out, but that's about it.

Clutch
I just replaced my clutch in my '95 two days ago, at 108K. Surprisingly, there was still plenty of friction material left on the disc! It failed when the rivets that hold the disc to the hub sheared off, causing the disc to just flop around in the transmission. I had replaced the axles and put some new tires & wheels on the car a week prior to the clutch's demise, and suspect that the clutch became the "weakest link" afterward.
It's the story of my automotive life; I repair or upgrade one component, and open up a Pandora's box of other problems!

Well, as they say "if it ain't broken, don't fix it"; but my take is that if you follow that, you'll be faced with a ton of things to do all at once one day. Better to ease into it, little by little.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone has published guidelines for the "die hard high mileage owner", outlining the typical things that wear out that should be inspected or replaced. It's amazing how many things can wear out on a car, although these days the lifespan of components is quite longer. Bottom line--if you don't perform regular servicing, parts begin to wear faster, and one bad part can force others to prematurely wear.

I'm at 101K on my original stock clutch without any signs of wear. This is also after about 70 or so runs down the track and some occasional spirited in-town driving.
It's the one thing on my car that I would use a stock part to replace.

Almost 98K miles on my OEM clutch and it still grabs very hard with no signs of slippage. I also have about 3 years of 1/4 mile racing on this clutch with ~30 passes. Around town, I do romp on it a bit, but it is rare that I ever slam the 1-2 or 2-3 shifts. There's just no need unless you're racing against a clock.
I think the things that kill clutches quickly are:
1) Clutch dump launches
2) Constant hard shifts
3) High rpm clutch slippage during racing
4) Overall inexperience with a manual tranny
At the track, I launch at 3500-4000rpms with just a little clutch slippage to get rolling and then I quickly let up the clutch (no dumping) and feed the car some gas. This usually results in mid 2.2 60 foots.
I'm very impressed with the OEM clutch and I'd be a fool not to go with it again. Every once in a while the clutch gets some chatter (cold humid days) and sometimes it's hard to leave from a stop smoothly, but numerous magazines have noted this and my car has done this for 5 years so I'm not worried. I've been expecting my clutch to die for about 1 year because of my 1/4 mile racing and the fact that my car is making 25% more power than stock. When it finally dies, I won't be disappointed because it's had a very hard life and it served me well.

OEM Clutch life
I have 155K on my 95SE which includes a modest amount of spirited driving. It still feels strong, but I've never had a clutch last this long. Out of pure paranoia, I've decided to replace it today with another OE clutch. No Bill yet but the estimate is $800.

Thanks
I've only got 66k on mine. Feels fine. I do have 1 question though. I get clutch chatter occasionally. Dave B mentioned it happens to him too. What exactly is it? He said it had been going on for years. I take it , its not a serious issue then? Just curious. I've never had any other clutches chatter. Thanks for info you can give.
