Well up until 2 months ago my 96' max was running smoothly until i began to hear a noise coming from under my car. It all started when i started my car. The sound coming from under my car started out low but gradually picked up as time passed. The sound is difficult to describe although it sounds like i have an aftermarket exhuast on my car now? Its not too loud like a rice sound but a low purr. I find it ghetto and want to get it fixed. I thought i might drop by you max experts first though. Again when i start my car it sounds like i have an aftermarket exhaust system. It purrs as i give it gas and rattles a little when i turn my car off. Im convinced that this might have something to do with my Cat? There could be a small whole in it somewhere? the sound is loud when i open the drivers side door as if the problem was right below the seat. I took it to a mechanic (a crappy one), and he mentioned something about a cracking in one of my pipes. I dont know exactly what he was talking about. Does anyone know what this sound could be? Im almost 100% sure its my cat. Any info would be appreciated greatly. Other than this noise my car performs well.

 

Probably, cracking in one of your pipes

Part of the exhaust piping is probably rusted out and cracked. Bring it to a local muffler place (not a big chain, they tend to sell crap) and see what they say.
