2K + Maxima Stock Muffler on 4th Gen
Is the stock 2000 and up Muffler any better than the fourth gen ones? I was looking to see if it was anything like less restricting or more of a power gain or anything like that. I am looking this way for now because if I can pick one up at a decent price and it is worth the power gain then it will keep it from beeing too loud also going aftermarket.

Ah!
Have been wondering. Think the 2K SE has a dual track rear muffler which contributes to the 10% hike in power from the same engine.
If the physical dimensions and hanging points (except the due pipe may necessitate cutting out rear bumper skirt) are same it could be very good mod for top end power.
Check it out and let us know!

In theory yes, the 2000+ maximas and I30s feature a dual chambered muffler design. At low rpms on one chamber is used. This promotes better low end torque and quiet operation(also prevents resonance). At higher rpms, a flap opens and allows both chambers to flow. This promotes good hp exhaut flow.
I have one on my 3-gen VE + Y + custom cat-back(no resonator necessary). It's very quiet but sounds nice when you get on it.

Nissan claimed most of the increase in power came from the fancy muffler that's derived from the Skyline GT-R's, but infact most of the extra power came from the new intake manifold. You'll be lucky to get 4hp from that muffler. You want more power? Get a b-pipe.
Check out this video on the muffler. Cool

I believe there is a gain
I installed the Courtsey SS B-pipe and the 5th gen muffler at the same time. I felt a significant gain, but I think the B-pipe is more restrictive. I also installed the Stillen Y-pipe a week before the muffler, so I think it really unlocked the full potential of a variable flow muffler. You see, all the replaced pipes freed up a lot of power while it reduced a lot of backpressure. The 5th gen mufler maintains the backpressure at low RPMs by releasing the exhaust gases through just one 2" tip. When increasing to a certain point, the pressure will push open a flap inside the muffler and exhaust gases will flow out two 2" tips.
I think this such a genius idea, but I'm surprised there haven't been any improvements on it. Performance mufflers kill the low end due to a loss in backpressure. I thought an aftermarket company would have copied the concept to make an efficient muffler.
I suggust you use this muffler with the y-pipe and or with the b-pipe. The noise level stays around stock but gets a little deeper. If anything, the cat and the muffler are the least restrictive pieces in the exhaust system, so I'd recommend replacing the Y-pipe and B-pipe first as well as the intake. Also, I don't the 5th gen muffler is a direct bolt on. The muffler's flange is about 4" longer and curves wheras the 5th gen b-pipe is straight. I don't know why Nissan (actually Calsonic) decided to move the curved piece from the B-pipe.

Even if not bolt on
Even if it is not directly bolt on it seems that the appearance may have a nice look to it. I always like the dual pipe endings on mufflers. Also I was not looking for a huge increase in HP from it so only a difference of even 1 HP is not a major deal. Was this available on older Infinitys as well? Such as pre 2K ones? Just curious because maybe I can find an older used muffler cheaper if I go this route. Maybe from a 1998 or something. Doubt I will find many Infinities at the junk yard but ya never know.
Re: Even if not bolt on
No. For the usa, the dual chambered mufflers were only available on the 2000+ maxima and I30s. But the tech has been available on the Skylines but I don't know for how long.
They key thing here is that this muffler is quieter than 99% of the aftermarket ones. And this is with no resonator.
If you have the Y pipe and you want a quiet system, I don't think there is another muffler that will keep your system quiet(unless you use your existing stock one)

Tip Size
What about the size of the tip or where the two pipes come out? Do you think it would fit in the stock size cutout for the 98 Maxima? Dont want it to look too bad or anything so was wondering what your takes on it would be.

Re: Tip Size
I believe 4-gens have a single tip cut-out. So I would think you would have to 1) cut a larger cut-out or 2) install the tips BELOW the bumper.

hmmm
See thats the part I would like so Much because 1. If installed below it then it may make the cutout thats already in place look dumb with the exhaust hanging out down below and 2. I dont know about cutting it. I know If it was me to do it, it may not come out looking quite right. Think a body shop would do it for a reasonable price? I figure they could do it real quick and have it look good. I dunno.
the tip doesn't come out as far as the the stock 4th gen muffler. I personally think the 5th gen muffler looks fine on my car. I guess it'd look better if there was no cut out at all on the bumper, or if you could shave the cut out to a more oval shape. Still, it looks better than the Boxter muffler tip.

Here's my 2K+ muffler on my 96:
[/B][/QUOTE]
For a while I was using a piece of formed sheet metal painted black to cover up the stock cut out. After a while I scrapped the idea and just left the stock cut out exposed. On a black car it is hardly noticable to even the most trained Maxima-enthusaists eye.
I painted the muffler can flat black and I also painted the inside of the tip black. It makes the whole setup look far more clean and uniform, IMO.
As for performance, it's hard to tell because the Nissan muffler ARE NOT restrictive, but the sound of the 2K muffler is much nicer than the 4th gen OEM muffler.

I've been wanting to do the same since my 4th gen muffler is gone to crap now. Does anyone else have pics of the 5th gen muffler on a 4th gen?
