use a lower gear, but that will strain ur trans a little bit more than usual

If your an automatic, take the over drive off.

Yes, I have an A/T. I should take the O/D off? Would it still run pretty fast down hill and I still need to step on the brake to control my speed?

With O/D off, you can still travel at 60MPH without to much concern. Depending on the grade of the hill, you will probably need to use your brakes to slow down. Just don't ride them, brake, coast, brake, coast.
