Ultimate Roadtrip Thread

I have a dream. Houston to Toronto to Houston, 30 mpg the entire way. I have a smaller dream, dream #2. Dream #2 will help me achieve Dream #1. The Ultimate Roadtrip Thread; a thread that everyone will find when they are wondering how to prepare the Max for ultimate long-distance fuel-efficiency.

I am changing my oil, cleaning my TB, removing all the junk my trunk has collected this past year, keeping my tires fully inflated, making sure my alignment is perfect... what else?

Clean my KS? Clean IACV? Gimme your best shot, I got a few days to kill, and two dreams to build. Help me build my dreams.

You cant really clean the KS. Change the fuel filter and clean/change the air filter. Change the spark plugs if it's near that time for you. Make sure your AC is fully charged.

This might be stating the obvious, but... slow down.

I typically drive about 80 when I'm on the freeway. This past Memorial Day weekend, I was on the way to my in-laws, on a stretch of road in Ohio that's notorious for speed traps. It's not smart to speed there any day, let alone on a holiday weekend. I set my cruise at 68 the entire way. My fuel needle looked unusually high when I arrived, so I filled up so I could check. I got 33 MPG. My usual on the highway is 28. My usual everyday (50% city, 50% short-hop highway) is about 22.

I know faster is fun and saves time, particularly on a longer trip. But if you're after good mileage, back off a little.

IACV really only operates to control idle speed. Wount make to much difference when your on the gas.

What filter do you have, the K&N or the Apexi?

Oh and how does one "recharge" ones air filter?

hey -- I like this guy!!! he's coming to Toronto, like all y'all should!!!

Hey -- what's up in Toronto to bring you up here???

While this "Ultimate Roadtrip Thread" is a good start, other ideas
might be your "ultimate route", or "suggested routes" or any other
road trip things...

How long is that drive anyway???

I've driven Toronto - Florida --> little to no speeding -- and it
took about 26 hours, non-stop (Florida and NY both took about 5 hours!)

OK OK...a better reply from me this time...

-- replace fuel filter
-- replace (or clean) air filter
-- tires inflated
-- clean TB and IACV
-- keep your windows closed

my only other suggestion has already been posted -- drive slower!
I recently enjoyed 29 MPG while driving a constant 80mph...I will
gladly reduce my MPG to save some time.

driving 80 versus 65 will save you about 23%
over the course of a 24 hour drive, that's almost 6 hours less driving!!!

so, while you won't get 30 MPG, you might save gas for the sheer
thought of not driving an additional 6 hours!!! I dunno, that doesn't
make too much sense to me this minute -- can someone help me out?

good luck,
FLO_BOY

FLO_BOY, a friend of mine down here has family up there; his uncle owns some 5-star Italian restaurant that we will be living underneath (the basement is done up like a bachelor pad). Oh, the drinking age is 19, and there is a place where we can buy Cuban cigars :-).

Mapquest tells me it is 1638 miles, and 25 hours. With a little fancy (heavy) footwork, we can be there in 23.

Hey you'll have to tell me about some cool jazz/blues bars up there. Mmmm... I can taste the free 5-star Italian food now... Man I'm gonna gain weight.
