Well, you're better off replacing the whole axle than just the boot. Unless, of course, the tear is very small. Judging by your description of having black **** all over the inside of your fender, it's probably a pretty big gash.

Just replace the axle with one from Autozone/Pepboys, or if you don't mind waiting, it's best to go to www.raxles.com

Price? IIRC each axle is ~$65. The boots are ~$25, but if any stuff got in the joint you'll need new axles eventually anyhow. Replacing the axles is quite easy if your semi-handy. I couldn't tell you how much a shop will charge, though.

Raxles is a far better axle, plus lifetime warranty. But it does cost a bit more (over $100).

But well worth knowing you probably never have to worry about it ever again, and if you do, it's free.

I've done my axles 8 times now, if you count each axle as 1 time. (2 replacement axles, + 5 spd swap going wrong 3 times and having to be redone after install) <that sucked!>

It can easily be done in an afternoon without even getting too sweaty.

True. (Where did I put that receipt!?!?! )

If I'm not mistaken, the axles from Autozone come with a lifetime warranty as well. (Don't quote me on that, though)

probably. But Raxles customer service is awesome.

Example:
I lost an axle. Shop told me it was because I was too low and wouldn't cover it under warranty. They said because there was no rips in the boots, that being too low had to be the cause.

Because it wasn't a big deal (not TOO much money) I called Mardi at Raxles and asked him if it was possible. He said it is possible, but it takes not just being too low, but bad roads.

Well, I live in Seattle - roads suck here.

So I bought an axle from Mardi and sent him my core.

A few weeks later I get an E-Mail from him and he had disassembled my old axle, and make a Powerpoint presentation with many pictures showing me points of failure. The diagnosis is that my Sprint Springs + bad roads did it.

So I bought new springs, and haven't lost an axle since.

AutoZone doesn't do Powerpoint.

The labor is even easier if you're a mechanic with a lift.

he'll probably do it in 10 minutes.

Which means (assuming $60 an hour for labor) that he's charging you $165.00 for the Axle and $10.00 for labor.

Do it yourself and save money.

I've got a reconditioned LF axle for a 5spd w/ ABS and LSD. Bought the damn thing and turns out I don't have limited slip, and the return policy was a pain in the ***, so I never bothered, and it's been sitting in my room for 2 or 3 months. Shoot me an email if you're interested and we can talk price. I paid a core charge, so I'm gonna lose money no matter what, so I'm just gonna get rid of it for about what I paid for the part itself. Boots already packed. I do have a boot kit for LF as well. Although, it's not recommended to repack the boots, and honestly, it's porlly cheaper and alot easier, and cleaner to just replace the whole thing, but whatever.
