What could I use to clean the rust of my rotors? I am getting rims and painting my calipers. What could I use to get the rust off? THanks

 

is it on the actual rotor, or is it where the rotor meets the hub? if it's where it meets the hub, just use sand paper then paint...an angle grinder would work as well. if it's on the rotor itself...brake pads work the best.

That is quite possibly the worst advice ever. Rotors are made of iron... if they are not plated or painted, they will rust as soon as water touches them. My Brembo drilled/slotted rotors started to rust the second day I got them, should I have gotten new ones?

 

You're an idiot!

The swept area of the rotors will drop the rust as soon as you drive around a bit. If it's really severe, flaking, then you could clean them up with Naval Jelly, grinder, sandpaper, etc. and then reassemble. If it's just discoloration, don't worry about it.

 

 

If your brand new Brembro rotors start to rust -- you should promptly send them to me.

 

They rust where the rotor meets the hub and on the side, the width part of the rotor. So just use sandpaper?

 

You do understand that the day after you clean the rust off of them it is going to rain and you are going to be right back where you started right? If you really care that much sell your current rotors and get some plated rotors and you never have to worry about it again.

 

does anybody have pics of the hub part painted body color? ive been thinking about painting mine because i dont want to have to sand the damn rotors before a show. but do you think the rotors will look :007 with the hub area painted red?

 

I think it'd look pretty good if you painted them red, but make sure to paint the calipers also.

 

I used some steel wool to get the heavy rust off the center of the rotor (hub) followed by some brake cleaner. Once it dried, I sprayed the area with high temp gloss black paint. If you get a little on the face of the rotor its alright, it will wear off as soon as you drive. You could also apply the paint with a brush...

 

I painted my rear calipers/rotor hubs the other day. Cleaned everything up with brake parts cleaner, then scrubed with soap and water. Then painted. There was a little ring of rust where the rotor and hub come together, I just painted over it.

Sand the rust off, then clean w/ brake clean (great stuff, high pressure alcohol?). Then paint. Woo hoo!!! of course, you could just replace them when the rust, but you may want to save the $300ish bucks for new rotors that u would be replacing every day and just paint the centers.

 

What temp paint should I get? They have 500,900 and 1500 but that has to be cured.

 

500 should be plenty. If your brakes get hotter then 500 your fluid will boil, then you'll have bigger problems...

 

yea i am saying, the best way to get the rust off the rotor is to used your brake petal. what you do is when you are driving, you push it when you need to stop. that will get it off!
