Y-Pipe banging noises...help?

Hey everyone, MichaelAE in the second post describes my case:

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....=ypipe+banging

Another very good similar sounding case:

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....=ypipe+banging

The banging noise I have is coming from the right side of the center console, near the shifter and say, near the left foot of a passenger. I have a Warpspeed Aluminized MB Y-pipe.

I dont know what it is. We first thought it was the Warpspeed Stage 2 cross members, but we took off the front two that were potentially in contact with it. It reduced the noise a little, but there is still banging ONLY when I lauch moderately in 1st and 2nd. Does anyone have a similar case and what did you do about it? The word to describe the noise is "clanking." I will keep reseraching on the solutions in the threads I found. Thanks.

Chris

Okay, I drove it again. More generally, the noise is apparent when I'm pushing the car moderately or more. It happens at the lower RPMs for sure. This only happens with the vehicle is under load. Revving the engine in neutral is noise free (banging wise).

Location wise, it is right in front of the shifter console. I lined it up while looking below the car and it seems it's in the area where the cat and the y-pipe connect.

Can anyone help me? maybe give me an idea of what to tell an exhuast shop to fix? thanks

It's the hanger. Mine does it too in the same area and under load, but also on left turns. I sorta fixed it by squeezing it with a clamp when everything was connected. It helped alot but I didn't get it perfect. I will try to clamp it some more this weekend and it should solve it. If that doesn't work I will just put rubber between the hanger and the frame and hope for the best.

I had the same problem with my Budget Y. Sounds like when the engine is under load, it shifts, which moves the Y-pipe and it's probably hitting or coming into contact with the car. You can get new hangers. I had a muffler shop bend my y-pipe so that it wouldn't hit. Sound went away & I've never heard it again. It's been about 6 months or so now with no problem.

Help please? I think I found my problem but I need to get it on a lift to fix it, ARGH!

In addition to having some help finding someone to host my 3MB movies, can anyone take pics of their Y-pipe (those who don't have any noise issues) setup at the cat and y-pipe connection? I'm interested in seeing the hangers and all of the heat shielding around that area.

Ok, here is my video:

Don't mind the exhuast sound, just listen for the rattling after every shift. It is very apparent.

Please use the right-click "Save Target As.." function. Thanks.

Okay, since no one decided to help...

I got the noise fixed. The mechanic fixed two things; a slightly misaligned hanger on the b-pipe, and he used a metal bar and wedged it in between the y-pipe/cat connection and the hanger and bent it outwards towards the side of the car.

Everything is perfect now.

glad you got it fixed and if i would have seen this before i would have responded. i wasnt sure if you had the first main exhaust support brace on a 4th gen but that was my main cause of rubbing. at throttle the exhaust would move back and down and hit the brace. i removed the brace and bent it to fit back on because it was a sizeable size so i figured it was good for some rigidity.

Yep, it sounds like the same thing I posted above. Glad it's fixed now.
