1995 lower ball joints / control arm

My '95 has 250,000 miles on it - "clunking sound" is getting worse and I figure it's time to replace lower ball joints. From what I can gather you are "supposed" to replace the entire control arm ($180 each side parts only) as the ball joints are not the type that are "replaceable". However, I am seeing "posts" regarding removing control arms and having a machine shop press out the old ball joints and press in new ones - reusing old control arm. I see that O'Reilly / and Federal Mogul Web Site (and other after market on line retailers) are showing Fed Moog part # K9824 as the ball joint for the 95 Maxima @ $28 each and I do have access to our company vehicle shop mechanics and I am sure they could do this for me - if it can in fact be done.

My question is has anyone else done this (ball joints only) and did you use the Fed Moog # K9824 - or some other brand / part number?
