shift control rod removal?
shift control rod removal?
I'm attempting to get my transmission off of my Maxima, but I'm having a hell of a time getting the shift control rod off. Any tips? I can't get a wrench in there too well, and a socket-wrench is definately a no-go.
(I'm not having much luck so far, as I snapped a 1/2" extension and the shaft of my 1/2" socket-wrench on my hub-nuts. They were both impact-grade!
)

I hate to bump again, but this thing needs to be off! Is there some way (apart from supporting everything and removing the crossmember) to get this off?
I'm going to take the tranny to a shop to have it rebuilt, and I need to get it out tomorrow.

it is hell. thats about all there is to it honestly. I think someone recently swapping motors went ahead and dropped the whole crossmember there to access it, but I have never done that and have removed the tranny many many times, everytime i dread that one bolt.
get an open end wrench, and go at it. you can get just barely any turn in there, but enough to slowly get it out. your arm will be killing by the end of it, just from holding it up there.

I dont drop the crossmember to remove/install tranny..
and as far as ypipe, i dont see why you would remove it unless there is something i forget?
i wonder how nissan gets that one bolt, if there is some special tool or way to it other than removing crossmember or whatever that is there haha because i want it!

Anyone else have any thoughts on the easiest way to remove the shift control rod?
Anyone have a walk-through on doing a tranny remove/install? Motorvate is pretty vague about some things (like this damn control rod!)

I was the one who was doing the engine swap.
I looked at that bolt your talking about for a while, and came to the conclusion that I couldn't get to it without removing the crossmember. There may be a trick, or special tool, but I couldn't figure it out.
For me it wasn't a problem, as I was removing the engine anyways, but if I were just removing the tranny I don't know what I would have done. Its not that hard to remove the corssmember, so I'd just do that anyways.

Thanks to all who responded. I think next time around I'll remove the crossmember. I'm 99% sure I'm gonna have to remove it anyway to get the tranny back on.

and to get the tranny back on you shouldnt have to, just use a jack under the tranny, have someone else roll it around for you and up/down and get under there and line it up, then push it on. easier said than done, but you know how it goes

I'm pretty sure I'll have to drop the crossmember to get it back on. At the very least, it'll be 100x easier with the crossmember gone, and the engine tilted downward a little.
