Clicking noise from sunroof on 96

The sound started recently and is really annoying. It seems like a rattling from contact in the headliner. I think that it may be somewhere in the sunroof frame. It originates from the passenger side rear corner of the sunroof.

Here are the basics:

Sunroof closed, cover closed- Clicking is there, but muffled by the cover.

Sunroof closed, cover open- Really annoying clicking. Sound is worst in this configuration.

Sunroof UP (Tilted), cover open (duh)- Sound is rare/ infrequent, and is not as loud. Wind noise could play some role in masking the sound.

Sunroof OPEN (slid open), cover open (duh)- almost as annying as when the sunroof is closed, but this again could be due to the wind noise masking the clicking.

The other factors are the fact that the headliner stops making the noise when the headliner is un-fastened feom the shell (body) of the vehicle OR when I put any pressure on the headliner. I tried unfastening the headliner and letting it remain in place but unattatched (it is rigid, so it does not droop or anything ghetto like that), but it still makes the sound, just not as often. For those who do not know, the rigid headliner is held to the shell of the vehicle with velcro.

So has anyone else had this happen to them? Any recommended remedies? I cannot run around holding the headliner in place all day. Pressure helped aleviate a part of the problem, but did not cure it. Any thoughts are appreciated. I have a roadtrip this weekend, so I need to do SOMETHING!

it could be a loose screw in the sunroof framing, just a thought

Well, I dont know what that problem is, but this is a bump. Im also having a problem with my sunroof, but I think its the more common one. If I hold it too long, even a second too long, I get a really loud whiny noise. Any way to fix it? Bump to top.

What is the best way to take down the whole headliner w/o doing permanent damage or messing up anything?

Remove all of your pillars and unbolt everything atached to the headliner and it will come down. Be easy with the headliner and nothing will break. You may have to remove your rear seats(easy) and lay thr front seat down to get the most room to work.

Super old thread, I know. Im having a similar problem on my 95. Anyone ever come up with a solution? I currently have the headliner out and all the surrounding bolts that hold the assembly up to the roof are tight. That is not where the noise is coming from.

I took my slider out because mine was rattling around up there too. I also found that the black plastic trim on the sunroof itself was loose. I put a couple pieces of electrical tape. That stopped some of it. The rest of the rattling was the back of the headliner in the middle, it was hitting the roof right where the headliner and the rear window meet.

Update on this tread,
I took down my headliner and looked everything over, all is good, no clicking noises there. I have been chasing this clicking sunroof issue since I got my car last year. I finally found what is causing my noise, but am not sure how to fix it.

It is the sunroof glass itself. It can be pushed up a good 1/3" on both sides in the back. If I hold it up, the bouncing noise stops. I tightened all the bolts around the glass, but it still has a lot of play. Is this play normal???? If not, what can I do to make it go away?
