Are there any problems with Random Technology Cats?
I've had mine for a year and a half. no problems til about a month ago. the cat rattles like crazy when the cars on, it sounds like metal is clanging against each other...went to the muffler shop and the guy said the cat went bad. called the people who sold me the cat and they said to remove the heat shield that is connected to the top of the cat.....i'll probably check that out tomorrow. e-mail me if u want an update. otherwise all is well.

Peeps... may not be the problem you think
I had that problem too.. went underneath the car and it was one of the spot welds holding the lower heatshield... I just had a friend reweld (all) the spotwelds... problem solved...
Aside from that... no problems at all.

I had two RT cats and BOTH had bricks inside let go.
The second one was the replacement for the first one
that lasted only 3 months. The second one lasted about
a month longer, so I replaced it with another ordinary
cat from the muffler shop. No problems since last October.
I was told that my CAR was the problem by RT and the
muffler shop guys. The car was tuned up after the first
RT cat went bad (including re-setting the O2 mix). I can
honestly say I will not be buying another RT cat...

RT cat. problems
The main problem I had with my RT cat. was a very expensive price and minimal performance gains vs. a similar sized Carsound cat. Dallas and I actually dynod them head to head and found out that the Carsound had 1 less h/p gained vs the RT cat. I personally paid $220 for mine. WarpSpeed offers the Carsound with welded on swivel flanges for $110.I don't think that 1 h/p is worth $110+. This post is not made for advertising purposes, more to encourage you to shop around, compare pereformance gains vs. cost. Many people on Jeepsunlimited.com have been overpaying for exhausts components, when a simple search will reveal comparable performance mods for quite a bit less.

Dan 93 SE...you said you dynoed before and after. What was the gain from the factory cat to the RT? They "claim" 6hp.

RT cat vs Carsound
Unfortunatly we were unable to. Way back last summer before Dallas and I got the idea for WarpSpeed, I had a custom mandrel system b pipe made.I also replaced my old y=pipe and added a Cattman pipe, all in a 2 wk period. My old cat was toast so the guy at the shop threw it away and I put on the RT cat. I too have seen it posted and read at the RT web site that you can get UP to 6 h/p. With language like that I could say with our new WarpSpeed pipe you could get UP to 50 h/p. Its all in the wording. Dallas and I just don't think that the RT cat is all that great for the price they asking, and apparently alot of Jeep owners and Maxima owners don't as well because we are selling alot of the 2.5 bolt on Carsounds. Cat. Warrenties
96 VQ 30 has an interesting question. I had to look at the Carsound web page. If you carefully read the warrenty talk they say " Carsounds necks and bodies are warrented against rusting out for 5 yrs. or 25k miles".
I was curious, so I want to the RT web page. They don't have a spot about warrenties that I could find, but there was an interesting paragraph "Since all catalytic converters must meet standards established by the Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA) their efficiency in controlling pollutants is a given - provided a particular converter is installed on the type of vehicle for which it was designed. Longevity is also comparable from brand to brand because EPA mandates require the converter case to be warranted for 50,000 miles and the bricks for 25,000 miles. That leaves flow - and horsepower - as the only major characteristic that varies to a considerable degree.
(Reprinted from TURBO & HIGH TECH Magazine.) "
I take from that paragraph, that their warrenty is no different from the Carsounds. If I am wrong please correct me. Hope this helps. I do have a call into the Carsound main office in Calif. to ask them this question directly and will post their reply. Dan WSP
