i 99.9% think u MUST drop from bottom to get both out. it looks to difficult to take both out from top w/o hiting the timming cover on something

thats interesting...how would one go about going so without a lift/shop? I'd really like to avoid separating the trannies from the motors...the car is basically getting a drivetrain/engine swap...any thoughts?

You could "probably" take out both from the top. Question is can you take them out w/o banging the engine/tranny on everything on the way out. Won't save much time if you ruin your ac radiator, ps lines, heator core connectors, paint in the engine bay etc.....
It's easier to drop the tranny from the bottom and then pull the engine out from the top. I've dropped/pulled my engine both ways. Taking it out from the top was easier. You gotta jack the hell out of the front to drop the engine out.
http://www.cybrrpartspro.com/Chilton...961CH03_2.HTML just for ref, this is how you drop the engine out.
Note: consider getting a Fidanza while your at it. This would be the time, if you got a 5-sp.
