clutch replacement

My clutch is startin to slip and I just want to know if it is a relatively easy task to replace the clutch, or about how long of a job it's going to be.

It's not hard, but it's a long procedure. (I'm sure Jeff's gonna try to sell you a flywheel very soon )

You have to remove the transmission in order to get at the clutch. Go get a haynes book to help you out. I'm gonna do a writeup if I can't find a good one out there. There's www.motorvate.ca, but they don't go into enough detail.

The job can take anywhere from 5 hours to 20 hours, depending on your skill.

A few gotchas:

* Axle nuts can be a ***** to get off...put the spare on, use no less than a 3/4" breaker bar (1/2" bars will snap). If you don't have a 3/4" breaker, just do what njmaxseltd suggests:

Drive down to a gas station that does repairs with your spare on and ask him to crack it loose with his impact guy. Then just make it snug for your drive home and tip the man.
* The axles themselves can be hard to pull from the tranny...don't be nice...get in in there and pry them off

* I dropped the tranny without removing the crossmember...it can be done, but trust me...drop the crossmember...it'll make life much easier.

* The shift support rod...both of these bolts have to come out. This might be easy for you, since the crossmember will be out the way. (Crossmember was in the way, and it was a pain in the **** for me.

I found a reputable clutch shop that will do it for $400 plus tax including machine work to the flywheel. I figure it is prolly worth it seeing as a clutch is at least $150, what do u think?

useually you can take the flywheel to a parts place like Carquest(they will even come pick it up) and have the resurface done for a small fee.

$150 for a clutch? Do yourself a BIG favor. ONLY use genuine Nissan OEM (not KEY VALUE CRAP KITS) or a quality aftermarket Exedy seems like a GOOD oem feel/20-30% clamping force upgrade. And yes, while you're in there, perfect chance to put a light billet aluminum flywheel Why lug around 18-19lbs when you can cut that almost in 1/2 by going with a 11.5lb Fidanza?? Faster revs and almost no compromise in drive quality.
See sig for details. This also eliminates the need for a flywheel resurface.
