clunk type noise......help needed

I own a 96 with 119k. I recently started hearing a hard clunk type noise when I give the car gas after coasting and then accelerating. I read my Haynes manual and this was one sympton of a bad CV joint. The problem is though that it also makes this noise when the car is stationary. I searched and read that a bad CV joint will only make this noise when the car is moving. My car also makes thid noise when I shift from Drive to Reverse. It is loudest when shifting from Reverse to Drive. The noise seems to be coming from the transmission, kind of hard to tell though if it's around the axle too(where it meets the transmission). I had my wife shifting from drive to reverse, and reverse to drive several times, the sound sounded very metalic like(with a hint of a "ting" type noise). The noise is oringinating from the driver's side axle/transmission area. Any help on this problem is appreciated.

are all the mounts tight? is your strut bar hitting your AC line? is the intake filter banging on the fender? any heat shield hitting your ypipe and o2 sensor? my o2 sensor was rubbing up against the heat shield once

When my wife was shifting I looked, and was hearing for the sound. I suspected the mounts at first, but the noise was not coming from them, they seemed to be intact. The noise is lower than my strut bar and intake. Also the noise is on the side where the strut tower brace does not come close to the A/C line. Months ago I made sure that my heat shield was not hitting my y-pipe anymore, I got tired of all the rattling. I will check the O2 sensors tomorrow to make sure. Thanks.

Would there also be some slipping through the gears happening if my tranny was going out. I drove around and while accelerating it was shifting pretty smoothly, no slipping at all. Man this sucks .

Update:

I took the car to the dealer and had one of their technicians take a quick look at it. The service rep was nice enough to call him out even though I had no appointment and they were busy. He thinks it may be the axle, or some bearing. I have noticed today that I am getting a clunking noise when I turn right. Hopefully it is my CV joint or axle, and not my tranny. From what I could see my CV boots do not have any rips, but I did not get under the car to look. I will drop the car off on Wednesday to get it inspected and put up on the lift.

Found out what was wrong with my car. Passenger side wheel hub assembly and bearing where bad, they also replaced two hub seals . I also had them replace my CV boot. I noticed a slice in the outer material when I got under the car the day before I took it in (did not penetrate through to the inside though). Total price for installation and parts was $600 dollars . Do you guys think it was a fair price? I looked in my Haynes manual and it stated that this job was better left to a trained mechanic. The service advisor told me that my driver side would eventually need the same thing done, as it has some play in it too. He said that it was safe to wait a while because it is not that bad rith now.

Well now I have to change my front brakes and rotors (thinking powerslots), the rotors have heat spots and stress cracks. I will make good use of my Haynes manual to save a little money.
