Ok I just started to notice this sound that I think is coming from my clutch. Whenever I start out in first gear, I hear this noise like when you crush foam. It is right when the clutch is engaging. When I leave the car in neutral and push down the clutch, there are no sounds. It even makes noises when I go in reverse. Anyone else have this problem, it's really bugging me. Could it be the redline oil I just put in my tranny like a week ago? The noise sounds like a creaking noise like when you walk down some wooden stairs. Please respond as soon as possible

You may be hearing the sound some owners call "Maxima clutch groan". This sound is an unlovely characteristic but not a symptom of a problem.

thanks guys

I didn't have the noise before but it just started now. I was just being **** about it. thanks for the response. Do you guys have any ideas how it started? Maybe it is the redline fluid but I doubt it. O well thanks again

It's unlikely that the RedLine fluid is responsible. Most Maxima owners who have tried RedLine have high praise for it. However, a few have reported axle seal leaks which began immediately after filling with the synthetic lube. Check the underside of your transaxle from time to time.

I can't speak from experience, as my '99 GXE 5-speed is still running with the factory fill.

My clutch just started making a noise like that
too. It happens when I start out in 1st or reverse.
It's a little different than the "clutch groan",
which I had when the car is new. Sounds almost like
a scratchy, squeaking noise. Not sure what it is.

Mine makes a "howling" noise...

Ok, that may be a bit harsh...more like a moaning noise. It is usually worse when the car is cold...like when I start it up in the morning. I thought it might be the clutch but people on the board say its normal. Oh well, car runs and shifts great!

same problem

mine made the same noise, but it came from the driver seat, everytime i shift, specially from 1st i hear it loud squeeking noise, so i took out the seat cover on the back, plywood cover, take it out and spray it w/ wd40, ever since no more noise, that was 8 months ago. try it maybe that's the noise you are hearing

Problem solved. it wasn't the clutch

Hey guys, Thanks for the input. I thought it was the clutch but I finally figured out it was the fstb. When you accelerate the engine moves back and hits the fstb and makes it sqeak if it is not tight. I tightend the bolts on it and no noise. thanks though. That might be some of your problems. Try to tighten the bolts on the fstb. Btw does anyone know the torque spec for the fstb. i think it was 22-30lbs right?

Thanks again

That's funny, when I start out and let the clutch out I hear this nice, low, vroom sound. Sometimes it kind of chirps a little too.
