fuel gauge problem

i put a full tank in my max the other day but my gauge went only to about 3/4 full mark. according to the pump i put in 17.563 gallons of 91 octane which cost me $30.02 ($1.709/gallon). according to nissan literature the fuel tank holds approximately 18 gallons so my gauge should have been at full or close to. when i start my max the fuel gauge needle visibly drops a little and then usually slowly comes back up, which it hasnt done before when i first bought the car. my gas milage still stand at ~400+ miles to a full tank though, which is a good thing. my guess is that the fuel level sending unit inside the tank could be faulty, or it might possibly be the gauge. ill try a different pump and different gas station next time just to eliminate that possiblity. any ideas guys?

It cuold be the 91 octane...hehehe. J/K. You might actually want to try checking the sending unit. Or the needle itself...have you taken apart the guage cluster recently for anything?

no i havent touched the gauges at all. i never paid much attention to the fuel level until i noticed the abrupt changes after starting. on occasion the needle would go up after ignition, now it does the opposite.
