HELP! Broke my idler pulley tightening my drivebelt.

Hey everyone. I overtighten my idlet pulley and heard a snap. Now my drivebelt is loose again and sparks are coming from behind the idler pulley. Can I take this anywhere to be fixed or do I have to take it to a Nissan Dealership? Also, is it safe to drive like this or will the idler eventually get so loose that the belt falls off? thanks

You can replace the tensioner pulley assembly yourself. It's just three bolts and it's not difficult. Get a Haynes manual and you should be able to figure it out. If you feel better paying a mechanic to do it, go ahead and take the belt off. It's not doing any good being loose and you might damage it further if you drive with it loose. You should have enough juice in your battery to get to a mechanic as long as you don't turn on your lights.

If this is how bmr4life broke his tensioner, then maybe it's best he just take it to a mechanic... Not that I haven't had my share of boneheaded moves. I once cross threaded a timing belt idler pulley bolt and broke it off in the cylinder head of a Mazda 929. I spent my week long Christmas vacation pulling the head off and having the bolt edm'ed out. So much for saving a few bucks replacing the timing belt myself.

Hey. I took off the belt and the idler pulley. Seems simple enough for me to replace. Does anyone know where I can get this replacement part? Also, the only thing I think I need to replace is the threaded bolt thing, thats what snapped. thanks
