ive been driving my sister's 89 accord for 2 whole weeks while my 96 GXE auto has been getting the transmission rebuilt. i had no 2nd or 4th gears! i can't wait to drive it again, but it the bill is $1600 !!! is this unreasonable or has anybody else had this done? i bought the car at 96,000 miles in june, and it now has 102,000. the guy sold it b/c he bought got a company car -- A 2000 Maxima. did i just happen to buy a "lemon" car or what? any thoughts are welecome

im thinking of selling this car with a "rebuilt transmission" or will that will that hurt my sale value?

Since you've paid to get it repaired, you might as well keep the car and drive it until the transmission blows up again in another 100k miles. The engine is a gem, so it will make it that far. In my opinion, the automatic transmission is the weakest link in 4th gen Maximas.

Thats about right. Most of what you paid for was labor. If you could have found a tranny already rebuilt for less than $1000, then installed for around $2-300. Not much, but it should come with a warranty for that price.

A friend of mine just had her tranny rebuilt in her 1999 Explorer, and it was $2400 (not a dealer). She replaced some parts that were damaged when the Torque convertor fell apart due to excessive heat. She has a tranny cooler now (wonder where she got that idea?)

$1600 is about right. 6 years ago I had my '87 Mazda 323 auto tranny rebuilt and it costed me $1400.

I think a rebuilt transmission won't hurt the value, maybe it will even increase the value. It is all up to the buyer. He may think there was damage that cause the rebuilt, or he may think that the built can give him some securities. Most rebuilt has warranty, which has values.

If I were you, I will keep driving the car.

1,600$ sounds fair..

....even though I have a 3rd gen.
I paid 1,200$ to have the transmission rebuilt on my 93 SE auto. The car had only 86k on it when it died, the worst part is that I just bought the car 2 months before with 84k.. thought I got a good deal but still ended up paying a ****load because of the rebuilt. The 1,200$ was at a local shop, I called around, got quoted on 1,300 at a local spot, 1,600$ at another private shop, and then I called Nissan for the hell of it and they told me 2,700$!!!!!!!!!!!! I got a 6 month warranty with my rebuilt. I guess a automatic tranny would cost more on a 4th gen then a 3rd gen. Damn, I hate to hear that the automatic tranny on the 4th gens sucks *** too... I am looking to upgrade to a 4th gen in the near future, and living in NYC, it will most likely be an auto, since i want to stay sane in traffic

I think a rebuilt tranny should be counted as a positive when it comes to selling the car, automatic transmissions don't really last a very long time, most people who have around 140k miles on their cars most likely had the tranny rebuilt allready.. My dad knew a dude who had the tranny rebuilt in his 89 Taurus 4 times in 2 years. My dads POS Mercury Sable has around 125k miles on it, my dad doesn't take care of it for ****, doesn't change engine oil for 5-7k miles, tranny is still original, car is still running... not bad for a piece of domestic junk. I guess it depends on how it was treated, what kind of driving the previous owner did and the maintenance that was done.

i guess the $1600 is worth it. since i don't really put that many miles on my car. it should last a really long time. it turned out i knew one of the owners of the local shop i took my car to. but it was a incredible feeling to get back in my car after over two weeks of not driving it. "it felt like the first time" again. i am still tempted to sell the max and get a 4 wheel drive vehicle. i got stuck in the snow twice this winter -- and both times i attempted to "rock" the car out by going from drive to reverse many, many, many times. (which maybe why my tranny had problems) but im skeptical about buying another vehicle that may need tranny repair. when i have one with a perfectly good one now!

ryan

p.s. unless i get any really good offers for a 96 GXE auto with 102,000 miles. with a awesome tranny!!! im keeping the max.
