have a 97 max with the cheapie non-bose stereo (originally that is). all that cheap plastic that's around the car stereo in the center-console rattles like a KIA when you go over bumps and all. what's the best way to do something about that? i doubt that i'm the only one experiencing this. any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Take it out and line the contact edges with either self-adhesive cloth tape or self-adhesive foam weatherstripping (kind that goes around doors from a hardware store).
