Water Pump

I have a 1995 Maxima. there is this weird noise coming from the engine, it's like a whistle. one mechanic told me that it's the water pump, but i'm not sure. i did change idle pulleys and the noise is still there, but when i accellerate the noise stops. i don't know what it and it's irritating. can someone help me? thanx.

I used to get a high pitched kind of noise at idle that would go away at rpms above idle. Then I put a supercharger kit on and the noise was drowned out by the V1 blower noise. But lately I've had occasional coolant seepage past the water pump seals, so maybe the noise was the first sign of impending water pump failure.

You could try isolating the noise with a mechanics stethoscope.

If you do have the water pump replaced, go ahead and have the timing chain tensioner replaced at the same time.

I had the same problem in my 95 and I had replaced the pully as well. The dealer said it was the pully and my trusted mechanic said it was my water pump. My mechanic won. It had the same high pitch noise that you are describing. Annoying as h3ll. The water pump is not that expensive, but the labor sure is. 5-6 hours of labor and $500 later, noise will be gone. DIY if you can.
