Octane issue in 4th Gen? Please help

I have a friend with a '95 max and he says that he has to put 93 octane in it or the car runs horrible. We know there will be a difference but he says it won't run at all sometimes. Another friend of mine has a '98 or a '99 his runs fine on 87 octane. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this? Was there a fuel related recall back in '95 or something?
Thanks for any and all help

No recalls for 95 Maximas, but it could be the knock sensor or clogged fuel filter. Check the ECU for ghost codes. When was the last time a tune-up was done?

anything less then 93 is bad for the Vq, it will only lead to knock sensor and performance problems

Yup, premium 91 is recommended, but the car should work OK even on 87. The computer will adjust for the gas.

I would say that the 95 Max that runs horribly is in bad need of a tuneup, and it may be especially in need of replacing the plugs.

Replace the old plugs with new NGK plugs

My car runs fine on 87 (my dad put it in when he took it for work a little over a month ago) and it never did any pinging. The performance was just a tiny bit slow, but it still ran great.

I'd rather use 93 Octane since our VQs benefit the most from it and as the label says on our fuel doors "premuim fuel recommended for maximum performance."

I use Mobil 93, great stuff, + it keeps things clean ... too bad my brother uses some crappy 89 octane and fills it while the car is running

if it does that that means your car is missfiring, Mine is doing the same thing. You have to check out what codes your car is throwing out. Probably the missfiring is causing the ks to make your engine go into safe mode, Your freind should go get a diagnostic.

Easily, you go under the steering column, towards the right side, by your pedals. Theres a panel, rip it off and theres a screw. Follow the instructions on the screw and make sure you have someone looking at your dash because when you "activate" the screw, it will flash your CEL. Thats how you determine if you have any codes. Dont worry, you will be able to tell the code, it will start flashing slowly at first, then pause (thats your first number for the code), then it will blink fast for the remainder of it. Just count it, and come here on the .org and do some research. If its s bad Knock Sensor, it will read 0305 (3 slow blinks, 5 fast blink), if its clear, it will read 0505...

Ghost codes won't turn on the CEL since they're not that "important." If the KS is bad, your gas mileage will go down, but your car will still run so it doesn't turn on the CEL.

You can still read the code from the ECU

87 octane is no more dirty than 93. Octane is a knock-rating, not how clean it is.
