im not very knoledgable about cars but,(correct my vocab) would it be cheaper to get a custom exhaust? instead if buying a y and b pipe and cat and muffler. cant i just get a custom 2.25 or 2.5 inch piping from the header into a hiflow cat(dynamax-cheap good cat right?), or no cat if someone will do it for me, and then more 2.25 or 2.5 inch piping into any desired muffler? i think it would be cheaper and you would get the same or really close performance resluts. am i missing other factors?

i got an estimate from my local muffler shop for 350-400 for piping from the header to a , a high flow dynamax cat, then piping to a muffler, and a flowmaster muffler. he said maybe we can work something out about forgetting the cat. the mechanic didnt even look under my car but said that thats what he did to his car; he had a 97 eclipse gs-x. his looked and sounded badazz.

if it does sound like a good idea...what size piping should i get..2.25 or 2.5 inch? i think 2.5 may be too big and may actually lose power. correct me if im wrong.

Some of the guys here have done just what you are wondering about and have done ok at it. Be sure your exhaust shop has a mandrel bender because you will lose flow on the corners. Also, beware of fit. Dallas and I have been to the shop many times tweaking here and bending there, just to get one model of y-pipe just right. 2.5" is where I would go.Also besure you get a quality flex pipe. Some of the earlier y-pipes didn't have that and it was noisy and didn't last. Lastly besure your man has alot of experience. Its just like going to the Doctor or Mechanic. Who ya gonna trust your car with? You say he didn't even look under the car? Run away as fast as you can! My 2 cents. Dan WSP
