Hey,
When i turn on my car after not having it on for a while (like when i first turn it on in the AM) and start driving i get these SCREEEEEEEEETCHing sound, almost like peeling out, but a little higher pitched. What is it? I thought it might be my power stearing fluid needs to be changed? Im gonna check it hopfully tomorrow, but want all your input.
Thanks

This kind of shrill sound may come from the accessory drive belts. They might be worn out and ready for replacement. They might be loose and require replacement. They might be wet due to a coolant leak.

One of the rotating components driven by the accessory belts may be "in trouble" and requires more than the usual amount of torque to get it spinning.

The larger of the two belts has an idler pulley. A dry bearing in this idler will squeal.

It is important to identify the source of the noise. A four-foot length
of small diameter rubber vacuum hose will help you do this. You can buy
the hose in any auto parts store. They typically sell it in bulk for about
US$0.50 per foot. Start the engine and let it idle. Put one end of the
hose in your ear and the other end near any suspected source of noise.
The engine compartment presents a cacophony of sound. The benefit
of the hose is that it isolates the sound from one specific area. Work safely!
Avoid contact with any moving parts!

You may find it interesting to explore the sounds of your engine with this
inexpensive tool. Each moving part has its own characteristic sound. For
example, listen to the muted clicking of the fuel injectors. They should
all sound alike. If you find one with a different sound (or no sound at
all) you have found a problem.

The dealer's service department is equipped with high-tech diagnostic
instruments. These are wonderful devices but they are expensive and the
dealer has to recover his cost by charging you for diagnostic time.
Sometimes the home mechanic can do legitimate diagnostic work with
nothing more than a rubber tube.

daniel know what my problem is?? when I turn my steering wheel all the way to the left I'll hear a squeaking noise (sort of dunno how to describe it sounds like something slipping or something) if speed is under 10kmh. It doens't happen when I turn teh wheel all the way to the right.

Use the rubber tube listening device as described in an earlier posting. You will find it.

weird noise

Hey Danny B I change both front and rear pads thinking the noise was going to go away but it didn't. It's a continuous
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeee
sound while I drive but it goes away when I stop. What the heck is this noise! Is it my wheel bearing? I would love to do the hose noise test but it only does this when the car is in motion. Danny Boy help a brother out, please! By the way, if I was to pay you for the questions you answered, I would owe you my Max.

Most likely that annoying sound is brake squeal. It is a common complaint.

What brand of pads did you install? Some owners say that only Nissan factory parts are squeal-free. However, I've had good results with name-brand aftermarket parts (Raybestos, etc.).

Did you install your new pads with the thin metal shims which came off the original pads? Better yet, did you install the new pads with new shims? See the Haynes repair manual, page 9-6, for photos of the shims.

Did you use the Blue Goo anti-squeal compound? That often helps. See the Haynes manual, page 9-7, for a photo of Blue Goo application.

Strange Noise

Danny B, remember when I posted this before and ask you if the brakes have replacement noise. You said yes, so I changed the pads and the same noise is still there from before I changed them. It sounds like some thing else. Maybe
the rotors need to be resurfaced and they are giving a turn table-like effect everytime the car rolls forward. But I am experiencing a grazed feeling while braking.

The next time you hear the noise, put the car in neutral and see if it goes away or if it stays. Does the noise get worse when you apply the brakes or is it the same? Just curious and maybe it will help if the Dan B. Max fix don,t work.

You didn't answer the questions about shims and Blue Goo.

I didn't use the blue glue, but I did use some other anti squeak compound from auto zone. Come to find out I don't think I use the old shimes and they didn't come with new ones. But still think it is not the pads. this is a different type of sound. It is giving off a low police siren
type noise. RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
It sound really weird.

I think the brakes are a likely source of the screeching sound. Those thin metal shims are important. However, if you suspect the noise is coming from a bad wheel bearing, you can check them this way.

1) Verify that all wheel lug nuts are tight.

2) Raise the car. If you have a floorjack you can raise the entire front end, and test both front wheel bearings. No need for jackstands, as you will not get under the car.

3) Grab the top of the tire (12 o'clock) and push away from yourself and pull toward yourself. Yank it to and fro in this fashion several times. If there is noticeable free play or an audible "clunking" sound, the wheel bearing is probably damaged.

4) Attempt to spin the wheel. If it spins freely but makes ugly sounds the bearing may be damaged. If it won't spin at all the brake may be dragging. This could indicate a sticking caliper.

Mine is the belt. It does it first thing in the morning just for a second or so. I put belt dressing on it and that stopped it for a while. I dunno if somethings loose or needs lube or replaced. I'll look at it closer this spring tho.

Re: I get that too...

Of the late I have been getting the same high tone squeal noise the first thing when I turn on my car or if the car has been sitting for a day or two without being driven. It lasts for probably a minute or two and then it disappears. Is this a sign that the belts are "wet"? or is it a sign or wear and tear. I am not sure if it is the latter because if it is from wear then the noise should stay rather than going away as soon as the car has been on for a few moments?

I really hope it is just the moisture. =)

Hey,

I,ve noticed on some cars that the belts will squeel for a bit and then goes away but usually starts up again the next day in the same manner. Then like on my dads car, his belt started squeeling, kept on squeeling and never did shut up. Changed out the belt and all was good again. Chances are it,s your belt getting ready to bite the big one. Change them both out while your there for preventive maintenance.
