Chipped A4 1.8TQ 5spd vs Stock 99 5spd

So last weekend I was driving up to visit the fam for the holiday weekend and it was very late at night on Friday on a pretty much deserted "back highway". I saw this A4 with HIDs come up like a bat out of hell from behind me and then he got right on the tail of this person in the left lane. It was an A4 1.8T Quattro with some young kid driving it so I figured it was obviously chipped. From how he was moving before, I knew he would nail it as soon as the other car got out of the way, so I decided to see what his car could do.

I got in behind him and dropped to 4th at around 70 mph. Sure enough, as soon as the other car cleared out he nailed it. He pulled on me a little bit at the start (should have started in 3rd) and up through 90 due to the massive torque in the chipped cars (230-240 lb-ft!). But beyond 90 I started reeling him in. A Stage 1 chip gets them up to only 206hp and he was 3200-3300 lb with a much more lossy AWD drivetrain vs a 4th gen with 190hp and only 3000 lb and more efficient FWD.

I started maybe 10 or so cars back (I don't tail gate) and just slowly ran him down in the adjacent lane. By 130 I had all but made up the 10 car starting difference and was only a car or two down, but then I REALLY started walking him. Turns out the A4s are limited to 130 mph unless they got rid of that somehow, so that could explain how I suddenly started pulling a lot harder.

I bet he wasn't very happy.

There was some traffic way up ahead so I let it coast down from triple digits. After that he was up for round 2 so we hit it again, this time from 80 or so. He had nothing - more power in 4th gear for me at that point. Race #2 never went far though because there was more traffic around a turn up ahead so it went a whole 10 mph and he gave up. I let him fly by after the next group of traffic and used him as a cop shield in the low triple digit range for the next 10-20 miles or so. Some ricer in an Integra tried to latch on to the train but he couldn't hang.

That was fun. He would have slaughtered me from a dead-stop though.

Any chipped A4 will have had the speed limiter removed.

A friend of mine has an A4Q too. When all he had was a cat back, we were about dead even up to 80mph. After he got chipped, he would leave me like I was standing still off the line and I could never catch up.

hey guys, my best friend drives an a4 quattro chipped. he has a lot of tq but im always beating him no matter what. they are quick, but not as quick as the maxima. we also raced on the freeway a couple of times, he can hang but then i start pulling on him also at about 130, but the reason is the a4 redlines fast. by the time im at 130, they are already right before redline. they are no limited, just their gearing ration is not as long our maximas.

who me?

The A4 I ran was definitely chipped. I ran another A4 of that vintage (pre-2001, 150hp stock) before on the highway and I was able to own him badly without even downshifting out of 5th. This guy was pulling on me a bit when I was in 4th. The stock 150 lb-ft of torque would not have accelerated this 3200 lb AWD A4 like it was. 230-240 lb-ft from the chip would have though.

(Note: flywheel numbers. not at the wheels. )

Its the other way around. All german cars have limiters from the factory. Some at 137, some at 155mph. Chips and such can remove these.

I know the A4s are limited at 130 because I looked up the specs for the older one that I ran at www.audiworld.com/ . My buddy's 330Ci is limited at 130. Most of the higher end German cars are limited at 155 mph. I think it's only Porsche that breaks convention and is unlimited.

All of the current 2003/2004 A4s are limited to 130. Even the S4 with the 4.2L V8 is still limited to 130.

A FWD A4 1.8T 5spd would be about the same weight. And that's the B5 A4 (96-01). The new B6s are about 200 lb heavier all around. And a 4-banger Accord 5spd is right around 3000 lb also.
