Spring popping sound
Spring popping sound
Hello all,
I did multiple searches on suspension noise and parts to change when you overall your suspension. I found that a lot of people have the same problem as I do: popping sound sometimes when I turn the steering wheels. It seems to be a consensus that the noise is caused by the springs binding or moving on the mounts. Even after changing all rubber parts and strut bearing some people still having the same problem. Would someone know exactly what part binds or move? Did anybody who had the problem found a remedy?
Thanks,
Stephane

Have you tried it yourself? For the most part getting a new strut bearing or regreasing it will fix the problem. Try the strut bearing. I'll look into it more for any other problems.

I had the same exact problem..my mechanic changed both strut bearings,he used Kyb strut bearings and the noise remained..We replaced them with OEM nissan strut bearings and the noise went away.

If the spring is not seated perfectly in the upper rubber seat and the upper spring perch isn't clocked correctly, (the word OUT faces out) you have a good chance of having spring noise.
The strut bearing must be in good shape as well. Replacing them or repacking them is a must when you take your suspension apart. To repack them, gently pry them apart at the seam, remove the Teflon slider and put some wheel bearing grease on both halves. Then put the Teflon slider back, and snap the two halves together again. Clean any excess grease that may squeeze out. The outside of the bearing must be clean and dry, not coated with grease!!
To insure the spring is seated correctly in the upper seat always remove the rubber seat from the upper perch, seat the spring in the rubber seat EVENLY and then place the upper perch EVENLY down over the rubber seat while it's on the spring.
When you place the spring on the strut with the upper perch in place on top of the spring, OUT facing out or in line with the struts lower mounting tab, the strut's piston should come up centered through the hole in the upper perch. If it's not centered, something isn't seated correctly. The whole assembly should line up nicely when you put it back together again. It's kind of like an art, everything should go back together smooth and clean.
Thats one of my tricks for a perfectly quiet suspension install.
