Questions about a starter!

I think i need a new starter. Sometimes i will come out to my car and after it just worked perfectly it will not start. It tries to turn over about once then nothign at all happens.

questiosn are:

1. How hard are they to replace. I am not that knowlagable but i can do some stuff, would it be better just to take it somewhere to get it done?

2. If i put a new starter in will it increase gas mileage?

3. What all does a starter do, i knwo the name says it, but it that all?
