Bolt Size on Knock Sensor?

I'm gonna try and have the wife sneak her hand in to change the knock sensor. What size socket does it take? 10mm?

Also. if that doesn't work , what kind of socket set up / extensions are needed to get into this area?

Last resort...take off intake manifold.............

12mm and you'll need to get a swivel socket with a 14 inch extension. A magnet wand will come in handy too. My hands are still bleeding....

For me the hard part was putting the new one on, could not get my hand in there. I asked my 9 year old if he would help me with this project, he agreed (he is pretty thin). I told him exactly what to do, and I put rags around the "cave" to protect his little hand and arm. He did a perfect job. He got the bolt started and I just bolted it down and was done.

I asked him that since he saved daddy so much money that we could do whatever he wanted. I thought maybe Knotss Berry Farm or Disneyland, but he just wanted to go look at some toys at Toys-R-Us. After we went to Toys-R-Us I took him to Dave & Busters and hung out there for a long time .

I would have asked Daddy to keep and maintain the MAX for my 16th birthday present.

I have 3 kids of my own. Your post was cute. I smilled a lot. Gave me happiness while thinking my family is perhaps as lovely as yours sounds like. God bless you and your family.

twiggy144, I am happy that my post made you smile. Thank you for a nice reply. I also have 3 kids. My oldest is now 11, I think she will probably get "Max" (this is what the kids call the Maxima) before her brother. She said that she would be happy to drive it when she is older. I told her that the car would be pretty old by then, she says "it's ok if he's a little older".

God bless you and your family too.

Hi Guys. Any suggestions for those of us that are not as fortunate as you guys to have family??? LOL! That's great! I have taken off the KS but can not start the bolt. My hands are too big of course.

I used one of those extension magnets to get the bolt in the hole...then used the magnet to slowly spin the bolt to get a couple threads caught. But after the fact I realized that if you stand at the driver side fender looking in toward the KS, you might be able to sneak your hand in to get at the bolt. The best way to describe my "hand Position" is palm toward the ground and reach in while keeping your palm facing the ground the entire time and squeezing your fingers together as much as you can. It'll hurt and be uncomfortable but the pain is temporary.

hopefully you have taken the air box out and whatever else may be in your way.

I saved $300+ and got a right hand full of cuts, which healed. My nerves in my hand were freaking out when I forced it into the knock sensor cave.

That was my only code and haven't had a code since .

I used a magnet just to get the knock sensor into its respective position, then a little trick is to take some electric tape and out it into the 12mm socket opening then put the bolt into the socket so it stays. Once you get the thread started, remove the socket, remove the tape, the. Tighten the bolt the remainder of the way. Longest it's ever taken me to swap a ks with this method Is 20 mins, and that's because the damn motor was still hot Smh.

Glad to see this thread is still helping people out! Brought back good memories. My son is a good 2-3 inches taller than me now...

Post above by bksmax is a good way of doing that.

Good lord, the nightmarish KS replacement continues.

Having small hands (or a friend w/ a small hand) will always make this job much easier.

Now all worries aside... It's not THAT hard to take off the UIM and LIM... just adds an extra 30 mins of misery each way.
