Lifting the car to install muffler

Those of you who have lifted the car in the rear with a regular hydrolic jack and jack stands, how did you do it? I searched and people said use the rear axle support beam(which is the big metal bar going from one back wheel to the other, right). The bar is way to far to the center of my car for my jack to fit under there. If i go from the sides I can't reach the middle and everyone says to make sure i go from the middle. Whats the best way?

Get a better jack that has a lower min. height. The rear beam support really should be no problem at all for most jacks. Definitely use jack stands whenever you get under the car--The 3/6-ton heavy duty variety is much more stable than the entry line cheapies and well worth the few extra bucks.
