Polishing valve cover

I just took off my valve cover and started sanding it. I started out with 600 grid paper and it is taking a long time to get all that black stuff out, but, since my license is suspended, I don't care, I got 6 more months to go. But is there any way to speed up the process, it is not a straight surface, so I don't think I can use any sanders (opinions?).

dremel makes a contour sander that works really well. and if I were I would start out with at least 200 grit...That's what I did anyway.

Palm Sander?

Can you use a palm sander instead of sanding it by hand? Are there any other alternatives?

Yes, a palm sander would work great on the flats. Abrasive tapers and cylinders in a die grinder or flex shaft attached to an electric drill would work great for the curved spots. I tried a dremel, but the sanding attachments only lasted about 30 seconds and cost about $3 each.
