Has anyone here attempted to paint chrome trim around the windows?

Has anyone here attempted to paint chrome trim around the windows on a GXE or GLE? A shop told me it shouldn't be too hard to do this. However, is this chrome trim made from real metal, or a plastic? I really hope it is a plastic, because I fear rust. I want to paint it a flat black. Does anyone have pics of their own after painting? Any pros/cons? I tried using the blackout tape, that other users found successful...but it turned out like garbage for me.
Thanks

I used the blackout tape, you can see it on my homepage. I cut it small enough to just fit into the chrome trim, you can only notice its tape around the bends.

The bends are what really got to me. It didn't look good on my car at all...you could notice multiple cuts upclose, but from some distance back it look decent. I want to paint it so that I can go right up to it and it will still good.

can't you use a heat gun to mold the tape onto the curvature of the plastic... i'm thinking about how people use heat guns to mold tint film onto taillights.

i'll lend my heat gun to anyone in so. cali that wants to try

This is a good idea...but I want something a little more permanent. The tape just didn't satisfy me last time.

it would be cool if there was a way to make it silver or alloy color instead of chrome

I just want the trim to be black so it blends in with my dark tint. I hate having too many different colors/shades on my car.

Me too. I painted mine with a product called Trim Black by SEM. You can find it at a body shop supply company in a spray can. There is also a self-etching primer that will work with it.
All you need to do is mask off all the trim, scuff it WELL with a red 3M Scotch-Brite pad, and spray it. Good luck!
