Question about installing a FSTB ??

Well for one thing, any tools i have laying around are garbage..and im the kinda person that doesnt mess with the mechanical side much, but im starting to creep out a bit. i also use kitchen knives for screw drivers and rig up all other kinds of stuff because i have very few tools ..

anyways i said that to say this .. i have a new fstb coming in today .. and im going to take the courtesy one off but the instructions call for a torque wrench ..? now i know i dont have that .. is it cool to use a regular tool and put the fstb on or is a torque wrench required for this.

some of you ace mechanics let me know !

well.. i installed my without one.. hence i don't have a tourqe wrench. But if u wanna tighten everything to specs.. its a good idea to get one. WIll definetly help u if u wanna get ecerything to specs. Else a regular old fashioned wrench with a pipe for tourque ought to do the job! * just don't break the bolts*

God ... I thought by now everyone would have gone out and bought a torque wrench already. It's $20 and you'll use it for other things on your car other than the FSTB.

You should be even be able to rent a torque wrench at your local auto parts store.

DON'T use a pipe over a wrench or ratchet when installing a FSTB. You'll get way too much leverage. The nuts only need tightened to 30-35 lbs, which really isn't a whole lot (in comparison, lug nuts should be about 80 lbs). Any normally statured male should be able to get 30 lbs on those nuts with a regular wrench using just fingers. No need to really crank on them.

Oh, buy yourself a tool set. Kitchen knives belong in the kitchen. My wife would be pis$ed if I used her good knives as screwdrivers.

Using kitchen knives as screwdrivers is a trip to the hospital's emergency room waiting to happen.

Don't make yourself out to be MacGyver . Be safe and get some tools.

I got my torque wrench for like 10 bucks at Menards I think. It was like $15-20 at the auto stores. I got one of those needle point ones, but it's nice and cheap

Why are you changing out the FSTB in the first place? The courtesy one is one of the better ones? I don't see the point...
