automatic transmission question/opinions

I'm planning on buying a '97 SE tomorrow, and I've already taken it for a test drive. I've been driving 5 spds for 3 years now, and I'm not used to how the at's shift. I can't tell if it has a shifting problem, or if it's just how it is. When you hit the gas, it seems to hesitate before it decides what gear it wants. It has 97k on it, and otherwise seems fine. I suppose I should just take another '97 out from somewhere else to test it, just wanted any opinions. Thanks!!
